Rushak has just told Drisal that he and Lara have broken up. Drisal’s feelings about it are … complicated.

How difficult it must be, to see her every day, to work with her so closely. "I'm sorry." It hit him then upon his own broken whisper, a sweep of relief, guilty and dizzying. He'd never acknowledged the pain he would feel if Rushak and Lara, tivenelen, went on to be joined. She would have had his brother from him. She would share in things great and small that had BELONGed only to Drisal all their lives. She would own parts of him Drisal could never share, in heart, in body and soul. Worst of all for the selfish little core of him was that she'd have his brother's faithname. She would have taken Drisal's place as his other half. And as he ached with Rushak's loss, biting his lip to stop it from quivering over his brother's drawn face, that guilty piece rejoiced he still had him—had Rethen—all to himself. A snippet from Ellamir by C A Malin Hannah's heart thumped and fluttered, while something else, something deeper and lower, kindled suddenly into a soft-burning glow. Immersed in the song of love offered up by the elves, covered by the vast blanket of silver-flecked night, and drawn close against Maqine's warm body, she had no thought or regard at that moment for the Lady of Purity and her teachings, for in the presence of the Silver Sister, benefactor and protector of all who love under the night, no lesser influence could abide. She had lived a childhood devoid of human warmth, empty of embraces: she had no knowledge of the comfort that that loving arms could confer, no acquaintance at all with the sudden, strange sense of belonging she now felt, nestled close against someone kind and caring, soft and strong. Only now, as it washed over her, did she know how much she was in need of it.

“You did this,” he told her softly. “They’re free because of you, Mireia.” She turned her tear-filled eyes toward him, still wearing a quivering smile on her lips, and felt her heart stumble at the way he was looking at her. “We did it together,” she said, squeezing his hand back. But he shook his head. “I wouldn’t have done anything if it was only up to me. This was you.” His smile was proud, almost shy. “You’ve changed the world, Sea Mother.” The tender night breeze teased his dark curls, tossing them into his eyes, which were shining at her in the light of the full moon. Every detail of him seemed to hit Mireia all at once, like she’d never truly looked at him before—the shape of his face, the soft freckles that sprinkled his cheeks, the way his smile lit up his entire body, the way his serene spirit glowed gently out from his gaze. And she was suddenly ambushed with the thought that he was beautiful, but this time she didn’t resist that thought. She let it settle into her, make its home inside her heart. Kena was beautiful, and the night was beautiful, and there was no one else in the Eleven Worlds that she would have preferred to be standing here with, listening to the pure sound of human freedom—the music of their children—as it rose floating up to the heavens.

Five more minutes, and I’m free. Five more minutes, and I’m done for the summer with this sticky four-aisle corner store where clock hands silent-crawl instead of tick. Five more minutes, and I can start finding answers. Hopefully. I unglue my thighs from the metal stool to bend down and pull up my backpack. It’s August in North Carolina, and the air is gelatinous. I push aside Brontë, Vonnegut, Whitman, and Woolf to take out my book. The book. The one with nothing on the cover. No title, no author. I snuck it out of my mom’s closet when I was seven from the single box of my father’s things I found there. I guess six is the limit—the number of years that can pass before a person starts digging for answers to questions like “What’s my father’s name?” and “Where do I come from?” when none are freely offered. It seems like there should’ve been much more considering all he left behind, but apparently an entire future of happy family-dom was reducible to one brown box. My gaze falls on the fading gray pencil lines filling the book’s margins. My father’s handwriting. The broad, swooping letters form the same three phrases on repeat: The world beyond the bark. The reading. I must return home.

How to fail bard training.

- Brother’s Keeper, book one of my fantasy WIP about two brothers bound by a misunderstood power.
Chalmalch had not seen his like in at least a century. He was perfect material for the vocation. Perhaps too perfect. He'd reached half-bard, and then abandoned the path, a terrible waste. Moreso, it was blasphemous to be so gifted of Maledin-Iryla and disdain to dedicate that gift to their service. Why? Fear of unworthiness? Arrogance? Or something else? Rushak's mind was not easy to steer along the narrow, convoluted trails of orthodoxy. The majority of Chalmalch's Acolytes followed those trails without doubt. And Rushak—How had he failed to place that ill-fitting name with that unforgettable face? The tortuous questions framed by thin lips, the perilous thoughts nearly voiced, and in the end locked away for another time and place. Brother's Keeper A.C. Turek
