I'll be donating to help free Operation Midway Blitz detainees, and I hope some of you can join me. We tried like hell to prevent as many detentions as we could in Chicago. This is another opportunity to help our neighbors remain in our communities where they belong.

615 of the estimated 3,000+ detained immigrants who were kidnapped in Chicagoland during Midway Blitz are expected to be eligible for bond this week. The Midwest Immigration Bond Fund shows up for people in detention who need bond, but it costs, at minimum, $1,500 per person. Pls help them.

“We need to give thanks for the solidarity and communal bonds that allowed us to show up for each other and for our neighbors. We need to take care of ourselves and get some rest.

Then, we need to prepare, because Bovino and his goons will be back.”
The federal blitz moved to Charlotte, but the trauma and damage in Chicago are still with us—and DHS says 1,000 agents will hit our streets in March. I wrote about what this moment demands of us: care, clarity, and preparation.
What Now, Chicago? Regrouping After Midway Blitz
Let’s make this a winter of fortification, of learning, and bonding together like the winter snow that federal agents are so afraid of.

“Short bursts indicate an ICE sighting. Long whistles indicate agents making arrests. If you hear the whistle and you’re undocumented, said [Whitney Hu, a community activist and organizer with South Brooklyn Mutual Aid], ‘you hide. And if you’re somebody who’s not, you go to the street.’”
As ICE Street Raids Ramp Up, New Yorkers Stock Up On Whistles
Taking a cue from Chicago, community groups have distributed thousands of whistles in recent weeks — a grassroots system people in other cities have adopted to help neighbors sound the alarm.

Aaron Goggans and I talk about what happens when movements start running on empty—how trauma, burnout, and dysregulation can shape our organizing, and what it takes to sustain ourselves and each other in a moment of crisis and emergency. I found this conversation so helpful, and I hope you will too.
Burnout Is Not Inevitable: Building Movements That Can Hold Us
“Care really should be at the center of our strategy, of our analysis, and of our practice,” says Aaron Goggans.

“Internal memos reviewed by WIRED reveal that the dataset was first requested by a field officer in the DHS’s Office of Intelligence & Analysis (I&A) in the summer of 2021. By then, Chicago’s gang data was already notorious for being riddled with contradictions and error.”
NEW: DHS secretly obtained Chicago police data on 900 residents accused of gang ties. It was quietly deleted after intelligence officers violated rules against domestic spying.

The handoff came well after city inspectors formally announced CPD's gang data was deeply flawed and infected w/ bias.
DHS Kept Chicago Police Records for Months in Violation of Domestic Espionage Rules
The Department of Homeland Security collected data on Chicago residents accused of gang ties to test if police files could feed an FBI watchlist. Months passed before anyone noticed it wasn’t deleted.

KURT VONNEGUT - born 103yrs ago today - was the only one to respond.

His reply was a doozy.

DHS lies constantly, and this has been confirmed in court. There is no evidence that any shots were fired at federal agents. The fact that the claim has no known basis in fact should be out front here.

Department of Homeland Security agents were shot at during an immigration enforcement operation in Chicago Saturday, the agency said — as federal agents were also accused of using pepper spray and flash-bang grenades against protesters across the Chicago area.

THEY PEPPER SPRAYED A BABY

THEY PEPPER SPRAYED A BABY

Please read this entire excellent piece by Caroline, which points out that a judge ordered the Feds (again) to stop doing **this exact kind of thing** and they are still continuing to do it all over Chicago
Arianna Sofia Veraza and her parents were driving to Sam's Club for milk, eggs and diapers yesterday when they heard helicopters and horns blaring yesterday. They had turned around to leave when a federal agent pepper-sprayed them through a car window.

Here’s how we should all be reporting on the spurious claims from these agencies that have repeatedly been caught in lies and exaggerations:

This is the facility that I and many others have been protesting. We’ve been hit, thrown, gassed, and shot with pepper bullets but none of that holds a candle to what is being done to people *in* the actual facility.

Read this thread. Don’t look away. Keep your eyes and the pressure on Broadview.
A family friend was telling us about what her husband shared about his experience in Broadview before he was deported back to Mexico. She's been sharing to friends and family because she's just in disbelief & horror what her husband told her. She wasn't able to talk to him until he was in Mexico.

DHS spokespersons consistently give petulant, amateurish, deeply unserious responses to inquiries about extremely serious matters.
After @mandophotos.bsky.social photographed federal agents pointing rifles at 26th/Lawndale yesterday, I inquired with DHS about what threat had prompted them to pull weapons on a busy commercial strip (pictured). This is the response I got from a representative of the United States government.

Another excerpt from Read This When Things Fall Apart: Letters to Activists in Crisis. Red Schulte’s letter speaks to those organizing outside the law—a place more people of conscience will find themselves as authoritarianism tightens its grip.
