I call this the reverse Turing Test. If an LLM is producing something passable, it doesn't mean the tool is intelligent, it means humans were being asked to write something meaningless
ChatGPT is spitting out mostly meaningless fluff that kind of sounds like polished copy to someone who’s not a skilled writer or editor. I admit that’s enough to get by in a lot of email jobs, but I don’t believe you when you say ChatGPT is good at writing.

Girls of all races and children of color of all genders get diagnosed later and get fewer academic and social supports because poor impulse control, disorganization, anger management, and low social acuity are simply *not tolerated,* let alone accommodated or lauded as signs of genius.

Stimulants slow my brain down enough so I can speak to you at a rate that is feasible to comprehend, otherwise i skip 26 steps ahead and you want to murder me.

Anyone who thinks stimulants are uppers for most ADHD people haven't done the homework.
There’s an awful NYT article about ADHD going around. I’m not going to signal boost it, but I want to say one thing: Raising the specter of “addiction” with regard to people with ADHD using stimulants always makes me laugh. Most of us have trouble even remembering to take and refill our medications.

When conversations about fairness in sports come up, I am always baffled.

Not the transgender of it all, so much as the idea that there’s fairness in sports. They’re arbitrary rules we made up to celebrate the people who can do them better and deride the folks who can’t.

Fun, sure. But fair?

OK this is beautiful. *blows nose, wipes eyes*
Also re-upping this for no reason (one reason, which is that the bottle looks like an ink bottle to me and I keep thinking "We cannot hide in stories forever, but we can write them both before and after we come out of hiding")

for @sarahgailey.bsky.social’s Love Letters: Reasons to be alive, I wrote about one of the best things the world has to offer: the sound of a party going on in the other room after you’ve gone to bed (and parties, and houses, and calling your apartment your house and, I guess, love)

No, I don't need a bloody copilot for this document, thank you.

Writing is, in no small part, a tool for thinking. If you outsource that element to a machine that cannot think, you shouldn't be surprised if, at the end of the process, neither you nor your reader are any the wiser.

There are so many huge things to fear and discuss that I've found myself taking refuge in minor complaints, like "I can't find the precise kind of herbal tea that I want," or "These tomatoes are slightly too fibrous." There's something so satisfying about a minor gripe.

Your path in life is not a straight line. You will overcome many challenges, but there is no inherent virtue in hardship. Sometimes it is worth struggling to get through an obstacle in your way, and other times the honorable thing is to veer away before you crash into it.
