SWAI Statement on Closing

We are heartbroken to announce that the Sex Workers Alliance Ireland (SWAI) is closing our doors after over 16 years, due to a lack of funding.

Since our foundation in 2009, we have brought an alternative voice to the dominant narrative about sex work in Ireland.

TII says there's nothing it can do to fix the traffic on the M50.

They could try building Metro West.

You can't actually cap migration into Ireland without:

1. Dismantling the Common Travel Area
2. Leaving the EU
3. Placing a hard border between the Republic and the North

This "population growth" argument the self-declared sensible people have come up with is in reality really extreme

Embarassing one for the Taoiseach.. No funding for construction of Cork Luas. It'll be 2031 at the earliest before it starts.

That is not exchequer spending and is outside of the NDP. The fund is being used to prop up spending that was already committed (MetroLink) because they're diverting funding to build roads. It's also not clear if there's additional exchequer funding for MetroLink.

There is funding for MetroLink.. sort of. They're raiding the Infrastructure, Climate and Nature Fund which was set up by the Greens to save for future environmental problems and in the event of an economic downturn.

Active travel funding is being set at the same level for five more years. With the ongoing and projected inflation in construction, this €360m will deliver a lot fewer projects than it did in 2020. It's effectively a funding cut.

There's no funding to reopen the Waterford-Wexford/Rosslare. The All-Island Rail Review recommended reopening this. It's only been closed since 2010 and is being maintained. Would have been huge for regional development.

There is no funding for Luas Lucan, Poolbeg or Bray. Luas Lucan is being designed now and thousands of homes are under construction in Poolbeg.

Luas Finglas, a simple 4km extension of the Green line, won't start construction until 2029. This project received planning permission this month and should be full steam ahead. Instead, the government is delaying procurement starting for at least two more years.

DART+ South West is shelved until 2030. It has full planning approval since 2024, no judicial reviews and is ready to go but construction won't start until after 2030. A lot of housing around Adamstown and Clonburris built in anticipation of this upgrade.

Four months after it was promised, we finally have the government's transport investment plan between now and 2030. It's bad. Roads are in, public transport is out. A lot of public transport projects being put on the long-finger to make funding available for new roads.

"Ukraine must “enshrine in its constitution” a promise to never join NATO. Ukraine must shrink the size of its armed forces to 600,000, down from 900,000. Ukraine may not host foreign troops on its soil. Ukraine must hold new elections within 100 days, a demand not made of Russia, a dictatorship"
This is not a peace plan. It is a proposal that weakens Ukraine and divides America from Europe, preparing the way for a larger war in the future. In the meantime, it benefits unnamed Russian and American investors, at the expense of everyone else.

This is a disastrous move. RTE's documentary-makers in both radio and TV are held in very high esteem all over the globe, and to shutter the in-house TV unit is as stupid as it is short-sighted.
