On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer

This is such a critical detail that many are oblivious to until they’re faced with a loved one requiring this type of service. There’s also no way to predict how long they may need assisted living, skilled help, or even hospice. And even considering that variable makes you feel guilty and nauseated.
Yep, nursing homes cost (nationwide average) about $9000.00 per month. Few seniors or their kids have that kind of money lying around., so yep, Medicaid pays. Lots of folks want "small government" until they find out much dear old Dad's nursing home is going to cost.
