For years, people argued that there's no point in taking climate action unless China is onboard. I'm at a COP30 event where Chinese government officials and renewable industry reps are outlining the fast-paced renewable energy transition and long-term carbon neutrality plan. The story has flipped.

So the Fine Gael party – 🇮🇪 EPP member in the EU Parliament – is siding with the hard-right to downgrade citizen sustainability protections in favour of protecting corporate power.

Good to know.
And here is the second, 'Mr. Hyde' part of today's votes - where the EPP sides with the far-right, ranging from the ECR, to Orban & Le Pen's 'Patriots for Europe' and the AfD's 'Europe of Sovereign Nations' for a centre-right to far-right majority on the Omnibus 'deregulation':

"For 1000s of years, Iranians understood the balance: Never draw more from an aquifer than nature could replenish.
That wisdom, once central to survival, has been buried under decades of short-term thinking & political negligence."

[Ireland's agri-ruled politics is water negligence too. #nitrates]

When you switch from fossil to clean you only use like 30-40% of the energy to do the same stuff, bc most energy from fossil fuels is lost as waste heat

What's I'm trying to say is that all climate action is degrowth

WELCOME TO DEGROWTH EVERYONE
From my file on the IEA's world energy outlook.

"Primary energy" = what goes in

"Final energy" = what comes out
a
The space in between: mostly lost energy bc burning fossil fuels is absurdly wasteful.

So in the net zero scenario, that gaps closes to zero --->>

Only about 10% of the world's population has ever flown. Yet, the aviation industry is responsible for roughly 2–4% of global CO₂ emissions. Does that seem fair?

Why should our flights around the world be subsidised and encouraged at such a cost to the planet?

This must change.
Opinion: Expanding Dublin Airport now would fly in the face of climate reality
Letting various aviation expenses to go untaxed has made air travel artificially cheap despite its massive drain on the environment, writes Aoife O’Leary.

Rumour is a dirty political deal is afoot whereby Ireland gets Nitrates Derogation renewal in return for approving the EU Mercosur deal.
Makes nasty sense: IFA etc & rural TDs get to say "best we could get" to rural voters, meanwhile 🇮🇪🇪🇺 Big Dairy profit from both. Nature & health FAIL of course.
For those in any doubt, the ongoing nitrates derogation debate is not about the science on water quality, it's political wrangling, with our rivers, lakes and seas caught in the crossfire.

Our waterways deserve better- one can't drink politics.
