I can be drawn in by a compelling pitch, one that makes a clear offer of something unusual or inspired.

But I will be won over when I see actual mechanics filled with potential energy. Give me a taste of how powerful play could feel, and you have me.
Okay folks - #ttrpg question time!

What makes you buy a standalone game (like one which has it's own system)?

Whether it's cool stuff like screens, merch, weirdness, utility - whatever the reason, tell me, because I'm nebby,

Every once in a while, I need to be reminded how good the playbooks are in Under Hollow Hills.

(They’re so freakin’ good!!) ✨

a big developmental milestone for wanderhome was a vision of a melancholy and beautiful post-apocalyptic world, and then i wrote out what i could imagine the "bands of success and failure" were like — when a player takes an action, whats the best case? whats the worst case?
When you're writing a tabletop roleplaying game, the mechanics should evoke the atmosphere you want in your story.

A simple example: we're writing a cozy woodland mystery game. What are the combat mechanics like? Well, clearly there aren't any. Combat isn't part of our cozy woodland story.

But...

Hey! Woah! I can't believe I haven't shared this before.

From a game of @rosscowman.bsky.social's #CityofWinter:

This is Valor, our young prince-in-exile, alongside Constance, the soon-to-be princess (though neither knows it yet!)

I love them dearly! 💛

I've been playtesting this for years now & following along its development.

I can say, unequivocally, it is my favorite rpg.

Anyone who cares about roleplaying games—as a player, as a game master, as a critic or academic or designer—owes it to themselves to see what Apocalypse World is all about!
Hey check it out! 11 days to launch.

This is a great thread and discussion about risk awareness and mitigation for game. In the same way that the kink community has had to grapple with risk as a central aspect of BDSM, games need to be intentional about it. Because risk is a necessary component of meaningful, pleasurable, experiences.
i think a lot of conversations about whether or not a game "is safe" would be more productively shaped by:

- how risky is this game
- are players aware of and consenting to this risk
- what are tools players can use to mitigate risk

Back in, I dunno, '15-'19, the G+ years, the worst person in the OSR* made the argument that rpgs can't foster empathy, but no matter what can only put you in a position to reiterate your prejudices.

The fact that @jdragsky.bsky.social brings up, specifically, the NON-expressionist elements of Apocalypse World got me thinking. Funny enough, I’d credit it as one of the games that opened up my own play in a similar direction.

Our first time with this game, my partner was a young priestess—the last of a sisterhood, put to a tyrant's sword for daring to prophesy against him. She fled with all she could carry & the hope that a sign from her gods would guide her way.

I played as 300 thieves escaped from the tyrant's prison.
So proud to see The Details of Our Escape next to titans of indie TTRPGs & for readers to discover Renee Gladman as a result. Our hobby is only enriched by cross-genre collaboration. Thank you to @gendershrug.bsky.social for believing in this project & to @decassette.bsky.social for making it shine!

Some interesting thoughts on exploratory/discovered play here, though overall the thread sets up “play to find out” and firm prep as incompatible in a way that I don’t think is accurate or consistent with the former’s origin in Apocalypse World (“always say…what your prep demands” etc).
“Play to find out what happens” (or similar phrasing) shows up often in PbtA and other games, GM advice columns, and discussions about narrative play. But I've seen it widely misunderstood (along with fiction first, but that's another subject).
