Every queer person knows exactly what dogwhistle the threat of “normalcy” is.
California Governor Gavin Newsom said on Thursday that the Democratic Party needed to be “more culturally normal” and “less judgmental.”

Newsom could’ve said “we need to focus on common goals” - neutral, reasonable

Instead, he chose to say “culturally normal.” This is loaded language. It warns you about not conforming. It stigmatizes those who do not. It’s a bad and divisive choice, and i think it’s worth noting.

Heartbreaking. The University of Nebraska will terminate its entire Earth science department.

One of the country's most successful and respected geology & climate programs: gone.

When ideologues & politicians are threatened by the very act of studying climate change, I wonder: who of us is next?
It's over.

Despite the fact that the academic council recommended against it, despite the fact that the program brought in more tuition than it cost, and despite the fact that Nebraskans need & deserve this expertise, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences will be cut.

BREAKING: ‘This hurts’: UNL eliminates 4 programs despite faculty, student pleas
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln eliminates the Earth and atmospheric sciences 8-0, educational administration 7-1, statistics 7-1, textiles, merchandising and fashion design 7-1 programs.

People keep telling me that private insurance providers will keep covering preventative care like vaccines because it costs them less in the long run—but I grew up in the before times. As in the times before the ACA.
Before the ACA, insurance companies didn't cover a ton of preventative care even though the long-term effects resulted in sicker people. It's part of why the ACA had to mandate it.

it's cool how every day there's a news story about the CDC changing vaccine recommendations and it's right next to a news story about how a kid died from a disease that last killed in 1893 but any reporter that tries to connect the two gets fired by a venture capitalist for taking up ad space

This is especially pertinent for queer love stories, because--and I know this is a mind-blowing revelation--queer people have been criminalized and persecuted because of who we find desirable and how we want to express it.

Why is sex-as-punishment or sex-as-suffering elevated as art, but as soon as you see characters having sex for the pure pleasure of it, it's immediately dismissed? Why do we have so many graphic depictions of sexual assault and sexual trauma and so very few of sexual fulfillment? Rly makes u think
