Do plasmids evolve faster 🐇, slower 🐢, or just like chromosomes 🧬?

In our new paper, we tackled this question using theory, simulations, bioinformatics, and experiments!

👇 Check out all the details in Paula’s thread!

While making data summaries - Do not listen to the League of legends and/or Arcane soundtrack. Taking a trip through memory lane for all the experiments, with such a beautiful set of songs will definitely make you cry.

Experimental evolution in winter - Actually a good idea. You don't lose out on any summer fun, you get done with transfers and most importantly, you are motivated to get it done on the daily.
With EE, Linkin Park's new album and Barcelona doing well - it's actually a fun winter so far!

📣 Paper: We show that mutators can drive the evolution of multi-resistance to antibiotics, in cases where purely wild type populations can't

This came out earlier this year while the other place was imploding

But it's a story I'm proud of for many reasons...

Mutators can drive the evolution of multi-resistance to antibiotics

Re-upping this: I'm looking for PhD students (start October 2024) to join my lab in Oxford. If you're interested in molecular evolution, archaea, chromatin, or all of the above, get in touch!
If you are interested in molecular evolution, chromatin, archaea, or other things we’ve been doing, and want to join us on our new adventure in Oxford as a PhD student or postdoc, have a look at bioch.ox.ac.uk/supervisors-... and biodtp.ox.ac.uk/home or drop me a line to discuss.

Well, one of my favorite papers (3rd fav!) of my career was just published at @eLife. Here, we do what we do best: generate new understanding of the factors shaping multicellular evolution through a combo of synthetic biology, exptl evolution and theory. elifesciences.org/articles/84336
Evolutionary consequences of nascent multicellular life cycles
Clonal development, but not aggregation, promotes the transition of Darwinian individuality from cells to groups, emphasizing the fundamental role of initial multicellular life cycles in the evolution...

We're having a bit of a tough quarter over at Skype a Scientist. I'm writing grants nonstop over here but won't know if it's working for a couple months.

The collapse of social media has made our business model of many small donors beak. In the meantime, your support is VERY appreciated.
We serve classrooms with connections to scientists for free.

We put science into people's lives with public art & pop-ups.

We help scientists connect with their creativity to communicate science.

We rely on YOU to do this work.
Monthly support keeps us alive ❤️

#Inktober 2023 Day 20, Frost. Keep your phages safe from freeze damage! Depending on the phage there are some different ways to store them, such as in 50% final concentration glycerol, or allow them to absorb to their host and freeze them in 25% final glycerol. #phage #SciArt
