I think it's a problem that we made science cool. "I solved a math problem" should have stayed a dorky activity we get bullied for genuinely liking instead of becoming a status symbol that vacuous people who have no interest in math use flex.

“In each of the instances recorded over two decades, orcas approached a person within a length of the orca’s body, and dropped freshly-hunted prey in front of the human, then waited for a response…”
These orcas have been trying to feed people, new research shows
Orcas in four oceans have been documented offering food to people, according to new research.

Sure, you've read about people falling in love with AI. This story takes that to a whole new level...and is hilarious, thoughtful, and dystopian, all at the same time.

It's hard to pick a fave character, but gonna go with Eva, an absolute chaos monster of AI romance.

I found people in serious relationships with AI partners and planned a weekend getaway for them at a remote Airbnb. We barely survived.

This shit is so grim. These guys are grifting like they're stripping the copper wires out of a slowly collapsing building.

A kinda important part of this is that the price increases generally only apply to uninsured patients or OON contracts (which often don’t bother to pay the inflated rates either, settling for “UC” rates).
When they can't collect payment, they raise prices to make up that loss.

Plus they need to have all the administration of a mortgage loan servicer to try to collect those amounts. Which of course also puts people who can't afford the cost, in medical debt, which often leads to bankruptcy

That authorization process is one we should not be asking ins comps to do. That role should be performed by INDEPENDENT TPAs. With zero economic incentive to approve or deny.

The first step is for self insured entities to use 3rd party TPAs and move away from insurance companies for this service

I think this frustrates me so much because *usually* when a collaborator insists on base they’re coming from an academic background/new-ish to prod settings and their code is a jumbled mess.
This is such a tired and annoying take. The majority of well written, sustainable production code written in R in 2024 is tidyverse code. Anyone who has to maintain shiny apps or production ML pipelines or actually DEBUG others’ code in a prod setting should at least be agnostic on this.
