The most insanely frustrating thing about the #ClimateCrisis is how the breakthrough we so clearly need isn’t technological. It’s just a collective willingness, a determination even, to change in ways that would clearly be SO MUCH BETTER than the clear and obvious consequences of NOT changing.

Got a couple of miniature watercolour painting sets that I saw advertised on Instagram, as I thought my wife and I could combine competitive painting with a lovely day out. The best work of art either of us will see today will definitely be the back of the pack of paints…!

This, and worse, is soon going to be the norm. We must act decisively and globally to keep fossil fuels in the ground and rapidly decarbonise to have any hope of our grandchildren having a livable planet.

Really proud to know @davidfloydnews.bsky.social and so impressed by what he and the team at Social Spider CIC are doing. Have a read of this article - it’ll just take 2 minutes - and have a think about how you could support brilliant local journalism.
Here's my colleague David Floyd on local news and its future

"Local journalism is a public good - rightly provided by independent businesses rather than the state. For many years it was a by-product of a commercial market. Now it mostly isn't."

If we want to prevent the most catastrophic impacts of the climate crisis, there must be no new oil and gas drilling. The evidence could not be clearer. So why won't Starmer commit to leaving all fossil fuels in the ground?
New report by @ucl.ac.uk issues a stark & unambiguous warning: opening new North Sea oil & gas fields is fundamentally incompatible with 1.5°C.

To align with climate obligations, researchers urge the UK Government to reject the Rosebank & Jackdaw oil fields.

On one hand this is good news - particularly if it reflects newly expanded capacity for generation. On the other hand solar has done well because we’ve had such an unusually dry and sunny spring. At Wild & Other, our solar was up 43% on the same quarter in 2024 but we had 12 weeks with no rain!!
NEW ANALYSIS: UK's solar power surges 42% to a new record, after the sunniest spring on record

* For the first time, solar was >10% of UK generation in consecutive months (April/May 2025)
* In 2025, solar has already avoided gas imports that would've cost £600m

Climate breakdown increases the threat of militarism

Our leaders should be de-escalating militarism and increasing a ‘war footing’ on tackling climate catastrophe which threatens the survival of humanity.

And yet Keir Starmer still refuses to act.

Will you act now – decisively – to prevent genocide in Gaza and to ensure respect for international humanitarian law?

This article, from the nation’s broadcaster, makes no mention of the climate crisis and that these unusual weather conditions will become more likely. It isn’t to be celebrated that we’ve had loads of sunny, dry weather - we should be worried, if not terrified. www.bbc.co.uk/weather/arti...

I completely agree and this is why I am proud to be a member of the @greenparty.org.uk. Our government’s silence on this - in fact, cowardice on this - is inexcusable.
The govt cannot ignore this warning: we must act now to prevent genocide. We must not let the govt become desensitised to the horrors unfolding in Gaza; I will continue to fight for a ceasefire and the humanitarian action that is so desperately needed.

This makes for very interesting (and worrying) reading. We haven’t had any rain at Cow Close Farm for 10 weeks now. The wildlife ponds are nearly dry and the clay is cracking, 300 new tree saplings need watering (my job for Thur) and our bees need puddles to drink from.
The jury’s out on if blocked weather patterns like the one over the UK this spring will become more/less frequent in a greenhouse gas heated world, but it’d be surprising if the massive changes to Earth’s climate didn’t substantially disrupt our weather patterns.

I’ve been thinking about how the UK will bring the carbon intensity of its electricity generation down by 2030. This is a very encouraging thread 👇🏻
So Ørsted has canned the Hornsea 4 wind farm project – what does that mean for the pipeline of offshore wind farms between now and 2030?

Not all that much...

Orsted, majority-owned by the Danish government, has decided to cancel the 2.4 GW Hornsea 4 offshore wind farm. The final investment decision had been expected later this year – they've taken it early, and it's a negative.
