Dating from around 1865, this hooded parka from the Aleutian Islands in southern Alaska is made from seal intestines, a naturally waterproof & windproof material. Both robust & decorative, these seal gut parkas would have been used daily to keep warm & dry in this harsh environment.

This is a painted grasshopper nymph (Poekilocerus pictus). Gorgeous.

Yes, it’s real. I caught and released an adult one of these in Arondizuogu, Nigeria once. 😃 My cousin said it looked like a masquerade and I’ve thought of them like that ever since.

The world’s ugliest rose bush lives in my yard. Apparently the previous owners tried to get rid of it, but the plant was tenacious and became one giant thorny stalk that each year grows a single rose. This year, that rose sure was something.

Monthly reminder: Many people have a book in them, but it takes a special kind of freak to leave the Land of Laziness, cross the Plains of Procrastination and Insecurity Mountain, find the Blade of No One Made You Do This, and use it to cut your chest open and yank that book out.
