She sat me down & asked me if I knew what happened to dogs that got the taste of sheep's blood. I looked at her & promptly said, "You shoot them." And she looked around at my father's things so neatly stacked & labeled & she looked back at me & said, "I just pulled the trigger." I never forgot that nor forgot the strength it took to admit someone doesn't love or respect you as much as you thought. Thanks, mom for the life lesson. Good luck Hannah. Stay strong.

I don't have any scary stories to share for Halloween, but I do have a ghost story! "Handsomest Gentlest" is about the flaming-eyed fiend who stalks the forest of the dead. It's also a story about a boy and his dog. I have been told that it might make you sad. 🖤

Ivy’s Goodreads review of FEAST: “What a crazy ride this is! I hate to give too much away, because I went into it not knowing what would happen, and all the surprises kept me flipping the pages quickly. Lots of historical and philosophical references here, though it is foremost a fantastical action-adventure tale, with very strange settings (like splashing around in the stomach acid of a beast) and lively bits of mythology. The story also examines class warfare and family drama resulting from social striving in unique and fascinating ways. There's a real beating heart at the center of it. Lovely, strong prose, too.”

Thinking of Barthelme as speculative, or floating within the larger pool of irrealism, is syncing up nicely with some thoughts I’ve been working on with weird genre/canon formation, especially pulling on this excellent thought by Timothy Jarvis and Helen Marshall
Lovecraft is often imagined as a fountainhead for the Weird, with various tributaries springing forth from his tradition of cosmic horror. Yet what if the Weird should be described, not as a river, with waters flowing downward from a source, but as an estuary where freshwater and ocean mix to form a rich, brackish murk hiding many reefs and islands? Such a way of thinking about literary history emphasizes transmutation over transmission.
