god help me someone asked what i'm looking for in short fiction. how do i say: horror but not like that, questions without answers, short, and fucking weird. the thing that makes good short fiction to me is that the final act of the story is in your head, not on the page

We are open! We've received ~300 subs and replied to ~130. About 30 more are waiting on a second read.

We aren't always reading in order, but we are reading steadily and expect to keep to our estimated 2-week response time, so don't fret, and hang tight! Thank you for sharing your work with us!

I LOVE THIS STORY! It’s absolutely gorgeous… and it’s flash, so drop everything and read it before you do anything else today, please and thanks.

My mom said my new story should be a movie. But if you're like "uhh, that source seems biased, can't be trusted," here's a second opinion for you: my dad said it should be a movie but a novel would work too.

If you need a third opinion, I also think it is good. 🙂‍↕️

This post is going around again! So, let me take this chance to say… we are having the best time! It’s looking like we will be able to accept <1% of total subs, so please don’t be discouraged by a quick response (we hope that’s better than a long wait!) and please do send more in the future! 🌈 🪐 🗡️
OTHERSIDE has been open for 20 minutes and we’re already reading submissions! Thank you to everyone who decided to ring in the new year by sending us your work—we can’t wait to read it all!

New story day!!! I can’t even tell you how much this one means to me. It’s the first short story I wrote, the story of my heart. I’ll find better words later, but… for now I will just say thank you to GNS for giving this one a home, and thank you to anyone who takes the time to read it, too. 🖤
New story up at GNS:

A thousand years ago, a man became a god. Now, the king sends his daughter to die three times in hopes to wake as something new & dreadful.

Different publication! @mruthrobinson.bsky.social's "The Last God of Talam Dor" in GigaNotoSaurus is a heartrending queer tale of religious sacrifice and forbidden love, and how queer love was the sacred thing all along (in my reading).
The Last God of Talam Dor - GigaNotoSaurus
Content Warning: religiously motivated ableism and homophobia, both internalized and external; self-harm; and depictions of ritual sacrifice including drowning, hanging, and burning, not very graphic....

You should absolutely read Claire's brilliant work, and you should absolutely consider Claire's brilliant work for awards this year. My favorites are "Celestial Migrations" and "If an Algorithm Can Cast a Shadow" (wait no don't make me choose) and you can find both linked in her thread!
what I did in 2025! I'm very proud of the year I had, and would love if you checked any of my stories out, I've linked some below :D

HI HELLO I AM IN THIS ISSUE OF LIGHTSPEED AND I AM VERY EXCITED (can you tell??). “Academic Neutrality” is a flash horror-satire about, well… academic neutrality. This story is the grossest and truest thing I have ever written. I can’t wait for you to read it!

We're open for fiction submissions!

We publish unsettling bad time stories that straddle the horror, fantasy, and science fiction spectrum. But genre is made up so if you have a dark weird horrible story that could be a fit, send it in and let us worry about it.

No closing date, open indefinitely.

Just sent off my last story submission of the year, which means I can do a small by-the-numbers writing wrap-up now! So, in 2025, I had…

Submissions: 65
Acceptances: 11
Rejections: 39
Published: 9 stories, 1 essay

This latest sub was my 150th lifetime submission! Which is a cool milestone. (1/4)

This year has been unrelentingly miserable. But the best thing—the thing that has sustained me—has been @othersidespec.bsky.social. After almost a year and a half of work, we officially launch in 2026… and we open to submissions at midnight! Make OTHERSIDE your first sub of the new year? 🌈 🪐 🗡️

The point of fiction is to communicate, to connect, to say all the things you could never say otherwise… no, just kidding, the point is to make people feel really sad.

I need one more submission and three more rejections to hit satisfying numbers for 2026… but nowhere is open and no queues are moving. Need one of you to start a magazine called Submit One Time And We Will Send Three Form Rejections, please and thank you 🙏

After 4+ years spent trying to find the right mantelpiece for our living room (in order to restore a walled-up fireplace), today we walked into an antique store and it was JUST SITTING THERE. THE PERFECT ONE. This is so exciting that I feel the need to announce it like a new publication.
