On every December 11th, members of the society will read the Act and reflect on what it means to them, personally, as well as what it means to Canada, the Commonwealth, and really, the entire world. https://sowas.ca/

On this day, Dec 12th,1931,

DOMINION OF NEWFOUNDLAND was created by the Statute of Westminster.

It gave NFLD full legislative autonomy, legal independence, & equal status with UK, allowing us to make our own laws & to control our own foreign policy.

Canada became a dominion at the same time!

We are reading the Statute of Westminster today and reflecting on what it means for us as Canadians. We are the first Statute of Westminster Appreciation Society to our knowledge, and we started in Canada, but of course we recognize that it applied to other parts of the world as well.

The Statute of Westminster granted lawmaking autonomy to Canada and other Dominions. It should be more widely taught and celebrated in the former Dominions, as it is the basis of our legislative independence. 11th December is one of three days the Union Jack is officially flown in Canada. 🇨🇦🇬🇧

Happy Statute of Westminster Day to all who celebrate!!

Also, happy 'read more closely' day to those who fall for the trap that the image on the Government of Canada's page about the Statute of Westminster is of the PM signing the Statute of Westminster... :-P

Today marks the anniversary of the enactment of the Statute of Westminster in 1931.
The Statute of Westminster was a landmark document in Canada's history that is sometimes referred to as Canada's Declaration of Independence.
This is the story.

King Charles will be opening Canada's parliament later this month — the first time the English monarch has done so in 50 years. He'll be delivering PM Carney's first speech from the throne.

It's a clear bit of symbolism as Canada tries to re-orient back towards Europe and way from America.

Ever wondered what the official difference is between convention, practice and custom?

@royalhistorian.bsky.social and @plagasse.bsky.social explain it all, with reference to the rules of the Coronation, and how it relates to the British constitution.
The Rules of the Coronation: What's the difference between Convention, Practice and Custom?
The coronation is an important constitutional event, with largely uncodified rules.

When teaching the Statute of Westminster I’d ask my students if 1867, 1931 or 1982 was when Canada achieved sovereignty from the UK?
Today is Statute of Westminster Day, which is the birthday of the Canadian Crown as a separate entity from the UK Crown.
It’s an incredibly important day for Canadian sovereignty, but mostly gets passed over, or under-taught in schools. #MapleCrown

Little known fact: Today is the Anniversary of the passage of the Statute of Westminster, an important day in the evolution of Canadian sovereignty.

Because of it, Canada was able to declare war on its own in WWII
