MA/PhD student in history, software dev in a past life. Ideally I'll post about books and art and medieval history but let's be real it'll mostly be politics.
Mike's threatening us with a good time here.
we absolutely must make sure that we live up to our enemies' expectations when we take power back
Johnson: "If they had no filibuster, they would pack the SCOTUS. You'd go from 9 to 17 or however many liberals they could pack. You would make DC & Puerto Rico into states, which would give 4 additional Democrat senators & make us a permanent minority. You'd see massive restrictions of 2A rights"

why in the fuck are people acting like Platner already won the nomination and we're arguing that people should vote for Susan fucking Collins? like, stating that as a plain fact? over and over again? are they lying on purpose, or just being as dumb as a box of rocks?

Maybe this is simply a difference in the expected 'rate' of knew knowledge, but this take puzzles me, because there's quite a bit of new data and studies needing to be done that I can see pretty easily in Roman history.

Knowledge creation steady and clearly visible.

Listen idk if it's going to break through at all, but if I were the media and the literal POPE was lecturing me for being a lying piece of shit, I may look in the mirror for a moment.
“With your patient and rigorous work, you can act as a barrier against those who, through the ancient art of lying, seek to create divisions in order to rule by dividing,” he said. “You can be a bulwark of civility against the quicksand of approximation and post-truth...”

Pope urges news agencies to stand as bulwark against lies, manipulation and post-truths
Pope Leo XIV has encouraged international news agencies to stand firm as a bulwark against the “ancient art of lying” and manipulation.

Understanding the libidinal/emotional appeal of racism and why it makes more sense than the rational economic case of anti-racism for generational GOP voters is what we need more than trying another round of deliverism b/c materialism does not explain this electorate.

There is a problem with people confusing procedural (bipartisanship etc.), policy, and aesthetic moderation. Buttigieg is an aesthetic moderate but a pretty consistent partisan, while someone like Sanders is a policy and aesthetic radical (within US politics) but a procedural moderate

there's a tendency in parts of the left to believe that 'community' is the answer to everything but communities are often horrendous!
did not realize that prisonculture's "abolitionism" consists of believing that lynchings would be better if they were conducted at lilith fair

I'm glad Susan Collins' legacy is being preserved.
Justice Anthony Kennedy tells @npr.org's @ninatotenberg.bsky.social "very worried" about our country, and that "Democracy is not guaranteed to survive."

Kennedy wrote Citizens United and was the fifth vote in the rest of the Roberts Court's anti-democratic decisions.

I can't get over how publicly attended executions are just casually dropped at the end here.

(The whole thing is horrifying but my god).

first off: my own class background means that, like a bunch of the reporters I was dunking on earlier, I've been raised to see having education and a family background of homeownership and professional employment as "privilege" & to assume others were "less fortunate"

so, I used to be a leftist dead-ender. I don't talk about this a lot because I actually have gotten some pretty nasty responses from people about it, but I feel like it and I think it's worth talking about so people can understand some of the mindset

Probably my loneliest position online is "I like Joe Biden and think he was a pretty good man and a pretty good President."

Which is weird since, like, at dead worst this is the position of a good 40% of the voting public.

people posturing like this makes being trans into a terrifying political allegiance instead of a sincere personal understanding and it's heartbreaking

the government is trying to make our lives harder and our community is doing jujitsu to *help* them do that
A few days ago I saw a skeet that’s been nagging at me: “Death before detransition.”

Who is being forcibly detransitioned? How would that work if it were on the table? Are there a bunch of re-education camps to throw trans people in?

Sounds like macho chest pounding divorced from real threats.

I have to point this out: international undergraduate students generally pay full freight at US universities, which means they effectively subsidize higher education for Americans; we *export* higher ed.

Full freight at Harvard is ::checks:: $86,926 per year.
He’s such a fucking idiot
