Dear Mom: I’ll bet you’re beginning to think I’ve quit writing after seeing it has been so long. Well, I’ve really been busy for the past eight or 10 days, and have also added one more country on to my list. Have covered better than a third of Germany, and was I tired when I got back. Was with the same army that Arthur Bethel is with, but didn’t happen to run into him. I only lacked about the distance from home to Detroit by Czechoslovakia. I wouldn’t have traded that trip for a thousand dollars. Got to see the Rhine and the big pontoon bridge. Aachen, Duren, Frankfurt, Kulmbach, Weimar, Sonneburg, etc.
When I was at Weimar, Germany, I went out about nine-thirty one morning to look over this concentration camp. I’ve seen some awful things, Mom, but nothing ever compared with this. There were Jews, Greeks, Poles, Russians, English, and Americans in it. The Americans were just taken out a few days before when it was freed. There were three others with me, and when we walked in the gate they would like to have mobbed us, because they were so glad to be free. One fellow, a German Jew, who could speak a little English, took us all around and showed us it all. First we went into a barracks which at home would house about 30 or 40 men at the most. Well, here, they made 200 sleep in it. Some had fixed ragged blankets but that was all, on which to sleep on the hard boards. Well, Mom, maybe I’ll be able to write about something different tomorrow or the next day. I know you won’t believe me but I saw every damn bit of it, and it’s as true as the day is long. I’m feeling fine except for being a little tired and a heck of a lot of letters to write.
