Far more dangerous than Trump, I think, is how quickly the last eight months have pulled back the curtain on America's elites and shown everyone how venal, how cowardly and how utterly mediocre the foundation of our society has been.

This is just straight up totalitarian. This demand that nobody ever say anything potentially alienating to Midwestern apes lest the fascist right might turn it into a political issue, is without realizing, the same thing the fascists are. A complete submission of civil society to the partisan agenda
It would be a huge step forward for Democrats and for general clarity in political writing if these terms went away. These came mostly from academic hothouses.

Criminalization as we know it originated primarily from fears of social disorder filtered through race, gender, class, etc.—not the need to prevent physical violence. Most crimes “on the books” have nothing to do w/physical violence. So when ppl want to go *beyond* the books, holy shit be worried.

the thing everyone is going to have to accept is that the post-trump period, whenever it comes, will not and cannot be a project of national unity, it must be a project of partisan project of renewal, in the same way that reconstruction and the new deal were partisan projects of renewal.

Not fleeing: New report shows more wealthy residents in Mass., 2 years into 'millionaire's tax'
Despite previous concerns, Massachusetts' "millionaire's tax" hasn't seemed to deter high-earners from continuing to live here, according to a new study from the Institute for Policy Studies.

propaganda works. biden doing everything he was supposed to after helene didn't matter because biden's enemies controlled the information environment and spread lies about it instead.
Remember when Biden gave everything North Carolina needed after a hurricane, and the press and Republicans shredded him for ignoring North Carolina? That was a century ago.
who could have foreseen that cutting disaster preparedness was a bad idea?

Extremely dark that the entire U.S. government is lying down to be steamrolled by something called the Trump agenda for fear of some force called "Donald Trump" while the actual Donald Trump has no idea what's happening
Helluva @notusreports.bsky.social scoop showing that Trump has no idea what's in his budget bill. Seems like something that ought to get a lot more attention.

Also this: a republican house member actually admits that they are attacking medicaid. Yes, they are.

I think a lot of people's fears of urban life are fed by the luxury belief that violence is about stranger danger and dark alleyways when it's more often about family and poverty. Any woman could get on the rankest subway car at 1 a.m. and statistically be safer than they are at home

what people seem to believe is that there is a large number of criminal, layabout immigrants who can be easily found and deported. they support doing so snd are dismayed by the deportation of otherwise law abiding people. the problem is that the criminal group is imaginary!
Wow. New CBS poll finds majority (55%) supports the *general goal* of deportations, but a bigger majority (56%) dislikes how Trump is carrying them out. And 63% want due process.

Again, we need a better discourse around public opinion on immigration, as I've argued:

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

The idea that the Culture War can be resolved is on its face absurd; the Culture War is entirely made up to be exploited by the GOP, it is not real, organic, natural, or popular. The only response is to reject its premises and cut off its tendrils
The article blithely acknowledges that this is indefensible morally but it is also indefensible politically. Democrats amplifying right-wing messaging and publicly disavowing their own base is not a good strategy!
