I'd say this is possible, yetmy glass-half-full view is that the EU's ability to create coalitions of the willing for some topics is, on balance, a net positive (plus the three countries in question are small economies, so their share of the loan would be small anyway?)

What can we make of the EU decision to issue a €90bn loan to Ukraine - without tapping into Russia's immobilised reserves? In my latest piece for @ecfr.eu I outline seven takeaways from the decision and why there is (much) more to it than meets the eye [Thread - 1/9]

President of Ukraine:

Our people really, really want this war to end. We are, of course, made of steel, but even the strongest metal can give way. Don't forget that. Stand with Ukraine, stand with our people. And therefore, stand with dignity and freedom.

I set out some thoughts last night on BBCR4 on the Ukraine day on the White House. In short it was a good day for European diplomacy. First, a well-schooled Zelensky handled his Ordeal by Oval Office deftly, with plenty of thanks and flattery and earning warm if vague words of support from Trump 1/7

I don't see how representative democracy can work if representatives live in permanent fear of violence against themselves and their families.
You can't understand the behaviour of US elites - Democrats being too timid, Republicans debasing themselves, bureaucrats who behave like pushovers - without reference to the constant threat of political violence that has come with MAGA. Every day is January 6. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/06...

Anyone not deeply disturbed by this is either an authoritarian or delusional about their own protections.
A video shared with GBH News shows Ozturk walking as several people in plain clothes with their faces covered walk nearby. A man in a hoodie approaches her, then grabs her wrists. Ozturk screams, then asks “Can I call the police?” before being told “We’re the police.”

Very good analysis by @profsaunders.bsky.social
According to @profsaunders.bsky.social, Donald #Trump has “three core foreign policy beliefs”:
1) alliances are a rip-off for the U.S.;
2) a dislike of multilateral trade deals;
3) admiration for dictators.

Zelensky is a wartime leader watching his people suffer and die under Russian attacks every day. To be lectured and lied to by Trump and Vance, as they defend the war criminal dictator committing these atrocities, is unimaginable agony. An everlasting shame for America.
Trump has not uttered a critical word about Putin but he and his VP publicly belittled the leader of the nation Putin invaded.

Ukraine is not, as the Russian ambassador said, a "project."
Its statehood is older than Muscovy’s.
It has been a member of the US longer than Russia.
It has a language, an identity and its own aspirations.

This is quite significant in many ways: the overt thuggery, Trump’s barely suppressed fury at being contradicted by a woman, the governor’s standing up, the total abandonment of the pretense of federalism, the continuing use of trans Americans the way Hitler used Jews.
TRUMP: The NCAA has complied immediately. That's good. But I understand Maine -- is the governor of Maine here?

JANET MILLS: Yeah I'm here

TRUMP: Are you not gonna comply?

JM: I'm going to comply with state and federal law

T: You better do it bc you're not gonna get any federal funding at all
