Just thought I should bring this to the attention of @linkara.bsky.social in case he wasn’t aware that this is something that really exists!!!

I rewatched Jumpin’ Jack Flash tonight. I want to decorate my future place with the same design aesthetic as Whoopi’s apartment in that movie, including classic movie posters, a novelty-sized toothbrush, and a gigantic crayon.

I have some issues with it, but “This Thing Between Us” by Gus Moreno has been living in my head rent-free since I read it a few months ago.
I may regret asking this, but...if I wanted to read some really good contemporary horror (by contemporary, I mean the last 5-10 years), where would I start? Some parameters: In translation is fine, shoddy writing is not; not esp. interested in YA; absolutely loved Our Share of Night if that helps.

Universities have the power, money, and networks to protect their students. They may simply choose not to. 🙃

I haven’t gotten to that one yet. I’m still in the middle of Destroy All Monsters, which has been a bit of a let down.
I have found All Monsters Attack to watch later. It will be interesting because apparently it's considered the worst of all the movies.

I love that Ark in Space pre-dates Alien by 4 years. Credit where credit is due, a strip of bubble wrap spray-painted green and moved by an air gun was creepier than it had any right to be.
During the filming of Doctor Who, Tom Baker, Lalla Ward, and Graham Crowden all went to the cinema to see ALIEN. Tom Baker, who at the time was roughly 50% ethanol by volume, started loudly heckling the film, at one point shouting "Oh, why don't you just go down to the hold and BORE it to death?"

Since I have your attention, I just want to say I loved your explanation of the reverse lampshade in Kaiju Preservation Society.
I once thought up a phrase for the absurdity that throws you out of a work full of absurdities: "Flying Snowman." It was based on the fact my wife could accept a kid's book with a snowman running, walking and eating soup, but when it started flying she was out:

Those kids defied the laws of physics every single day for an entire summer, and it’s the shade of the platypus that’s destroying your suspension of disbelief?
Why the fuck is Perry the Platypus teal, that is not a color that you find on monotremes in nature

This is a problematic headline. And ultimately can be dangerous.

The wording makes it sound like this was the position of Jewish groups, whereas in truth opinions were diverse.

This gives credence to these groups as if they speak for the Jewish community as a whole. They don't.

Maybe it’s a byproduct of my mom having a lot of recipes from the ‘70s, but it’s not unusual to see chow mien noodles used in desserts.
I looked briefly at this and thought “that’s just a chocolate cornflake nest, what’s wrong with that?”, but no, zoom in on the photo and you too will agree it’s unhinged.
My friend who lives in America showed me this unhinged official Cadbury's mini eggs recipe and now you must contend with it too

I’m thinking maybe a baking show with puppets and special effects by Rick Baker.
I'm 42 (for 2 more days) and I have a unique personality... I love practical horror effects and I also love throwing dinner parties where I bake from scratch for days while cursing like a sailor. I don't know if there's a market for this... but that's me.

Whomever is advising the Democrats right now is criminally bad at their job. The notion that they can meme their way out of fascism is truly incredible.

CNN reporting that Senate Democrats are “disappointed” in House members for violating “decorum” at Trump’s speech last night.

Just utterly clueless. And worth remembering next time those senators wax reverently about John Lewis.

"Fraud, waste and abuse" is the new "ethics in game journalism."

This is the gamergate playbook run by a manchild billionaire to destroy the federal government and usher in techno-feudalism.

DOGE's crackdown on agency spending means that federal researchers can't do vital experiments, order liquid nitrogen tanks to preserve samples, or refill basic but necessary lab equipment. My story with @zoeschiffer.bsky.social: www.wired.com/story/doge-e...
Elon Musk’s $1 Spending Limit Is Paralyzing Federal Agencies
The DOGE-mandated credit card freeze is delaying shipments of critical supplies, stalling travel, and stopping employees from doing their jobs.

here’s the thing: why wouldn’t you treat every dumbass idea as potentially worthwhile when a month later you can just go “oopsies” and no one holds you accountable for giving credence to stupid shit?

Opinion: a group of women, some of whom are trans, is not 'gender-diverse.' It's just women! And it doesn't have to be, but saying the group is gender diverse kinda suggests that trans women are a different gender and they're not. They're women. 🤷‍♀️
