still not expecting that email. the bill berry to your michael stipe. just trying to do my own brand of sumo. Mostly food. Blue Jays forever.
My probably unpopular hot take is that the star spangled banner shouldn't be sung by soloists because you really need the harmonies to make it, well, sing.

suspect a big reason why many academics and others who work in areas where getting facts RIGHT is key are disinterested in using LLMs for research:

they’ve tried it, they keep noticing major errors in output, and they conclude that having to verify all that doesn’t actually save them time.

"Fake citations have turned into a nightmare for research librarians, who by some estimates are wasting up to 15 percent of their work hours responding to requests for nonexistent records that ChatGPT or Google Gemini alluded to."
AI Is Inventing Academic Papers That Don't Exist -- And They're Being Cited in Real Journals
Academic articles from authors using large language model are creating an ecosystem of fake research that threatens human knowledge itself.

Yet one more reason we cannot allow LLMs to serve as epistemic grounding is that we cannot triangulate among them the way you can among reasonable independent sources. They bullshit in the same way and end up agreeing with one other about things that are completely false.

Never forget Polytechnique
The Polytechnique massacre on Dec. 6, 1989 was a mass femicide that left an indelible imprint on all Montrealers.

So you just get to read all day?
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

Since our fucking government isn’t observing World AIDS Day, I will. In 1990, I started taking care of people in the last stages of AIDS in their homes. I did this for nearly two years. The home care company I worked for had meetings for those of us who solely (or nearly solely) took care of PWAs.

Gender-based violence is an everyday reality, and it starts with minimizing misogyny
As we highlight 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence and the upcoming anniversary of the Montreal massacre, can we take a moment to reflect on all the different forms this violence takes?

We often travel for fun around Thanksgiving as it's also around my birthday. I don't want to be invited to anyone's Thanksgiving so it's a great excuse!
Actually in the spirit of this conversation, what’s a decision you made about a past Thanksgiving holiday that really paid off? I think people often feel trapped by their lives. Sharing our experiences can liberate us from that sense of claustrophobia.
On the most recent episode of VIBE CHECK, we answer listener questions about Thanksgiving, most importantly “do you go celebrate with the family members you don’t even like?”

Tears for Fears release “Shout” 41 yrs ago today.

The ‘80s, said Roland Orzabal, brought “a lot of fear, a lot of political tension. .. It’s really about empowerment — about refusing the roles you’ve been told to play. It’s an invitation. It’s saying: if something is wrong, say so. Say it loudly.”
