Finally read S. A. Cosby’s Blacktop Wasteland and it’s so fucking good. Oyeyemi’s Parasol Against the Axe is weird & gorgeous. Spufford’s Light Perpetual is everything I wanted it to be. Buehlman’s The Daughter’s War broke my heart. Craft: Stories I Wrote for the Devil by Lima is a wicked delight.

Interesting read, and a good slice of where the SOTA is,and isn’t.
Reminds me of the mad hand waving the “ no one will own a car in 5 years “ types would do (cough, 15+ years ago ) when faced worth scenarios like “accident scene” or “road works”…

to be fair no AV has those, with vision or even with lidar, they're unsolved problems. but no other AV company (at least none of the still extant ones) is just YOLOing around that fact

Showing off a "robotaxi" design is basically just another version of Tesla raising the price of "Full Self-Driving": since they can't actually demonstrate that the technology is even close to working reliably, they look to these other levers to build confidence/fomo. Classic fraud stuff.

The two major upshots of the LLM technology so far is that it filled the web with low quality spam and forced high schools and colleges to bring back blue book handwritten tests
The "ChatGPT is primarily just used by cheating students" take looks pretty good. Usage plummeted (despite all the media hype) when the spring semester ended. Then picked back up when the fall semester started.
