Sadly, I agree with pretty much all of this analysis of the failed #ucu HE ballot.
Unfortunately the HE 2025 ballot failed at 39% turnout. I have written about why and about what desperately needs to change in UCU's national structures off the back of this result. Some HEC members need to chi up and understand their role in all this, and how disconnected they are from members.
The HE Ballot failed, now what?
If you’re reading this it is because today the UCU’s 2025 national ballot over pay and conditions in universities has failed. The last time…

No matter how tough you say times are, there’s always enough money in the banana stand to pay an external consultant to scope ‘academic efficiency opportunities’ www.theferret.scot/consultancy-...
‘Nousferatu’: the notorious consultancy advising Edinburgh uni amid 'huge' cuts
Scotland’s largest university has turned to Nous Group at the same time as it is making savings that could lead to nearly 2,000 job losses. Staff say they were misled about the extent of its work.

EU countries (eg Poland) must recognise same sex marriages from elsewhere in the EU. This is a BIG DEAL, even if not quite the same as Obergefell.
BREAKING: This is huge news, the EU's equivalent of the 🇺🇸Supreme Court's 2015 Obergefell v. Hodges ruling.

🇪🇺Court of Justice just ruled all 🇪🇺countries must recognise same-sex marriages granted in other member states.

This effectively legalises gay marriage across 🇪🇺

@dmmdipodcast.bsky.social It seems to be the season for telling podcasters how much I like their work - so let me say how terrific this podcast is. I did not imagine when I started listening to it how much I would enjoy an insanely deep dive into the Perniverse. 1/

I've been enjoying listening to @instantclassicspod.bsky.social. Their most recent episode is about the underworld, and it made me wonder: how different were (classical obvs) Greek and Roman mythology and beliefs from each other? 1/

I am ashamed to be a citizen of the US right now
no surprised that brett ”almost certainly flunked his remedial classes” kavanaugh thinks the constitution authorizes a race-based federal “papers please” regime. quick, someone ask him what he thinks of the fugitive slave act.
This is a paragraph Brett Kavanaugh wrote on his little computer and then sent out into the world:

If they do this, it will destroy research and graduate education in STEM in the US
Trump admin planning to change student visas from lasting for duration of academic program to fixed 4-yr term, and then much harder to renew
Could destroy US ability to attract global talent, particularly those seeking advanced degrees in STEM. The median time to complete a PhD is 5.7 yrs per NSF.

Dave knows/knew both the Minnesota legislators targeted in the right wing political violence of last week, and worked with them on progressive policy issues. His reflections are worth reading.
Working in a think tank, sitting at a desk, it's easy to feel removed from the real-world impacts of the policies we support.

But Melissa and John helped make them real here in Minnesota. I was so proud that my legislators played such an important role.

Here's a personal reflection:
A personal reflection on the political violence in Minnesota

This is the largest cuts programme in Scottish HE history.
