Why pay Cody Ponce 3/30M when you can pay guys 5 and 10 years older and left off the Jays' playoff roster 2/40 or 1/16? 🥴
Cody Ponce is going to Toronto on a 3-year, $30 million deal that crushed industry estimates, via @ken-rosenthal.bsky.social . Giants were involved but market got beyond them. Jays moved quickly to replace Chris Bassitt and Max Scherzer with Dylan Cease and Ponce. Will one or both be SF-bound now? 🤔

Not gonna link to the latest Baggs article on Imai, but my two reactions to it:

1) all the actual "reporting" out there on the Giants' interest or lack thereof in Imai feels weirdly speculative
2) if on the other hand the reporting is true on the influence of private equity, the franchise is cooked

The price-setting company RealPage worked with landlords for years to overcharge tenants. A judge decided they can keep their profits, as long as they promise not to do it again. From @ddayen.bsky.social: trib.al/MbLEQ0Q
The Wrist-Slappers Strike Again - The American Prospect
A settlement with algorithmic collusion facilitator RealPage allows it to keep allegedly ill-gotten profits and continue innovating to raise rents.

there is no comprehensive list of dangerous criminal undocumented migrants. nor are there many of them in the country at all. “mass deportations” are by definition gonna be almost exclusively peaceful immigrants and sweep up LPRs, people on visas, these are the easy people to locate!
This is the scandal. Trump isn’t targeting dangerous people. He’s targeting peaceful immigrants. Almost exclusively.

also if I can Stoicism post just a bit: this is also what memento mori is for. you are going to die someday - do you really imagine than one of your regrets will be that you didn't organize more of your life around what random Redditors think is gay?

So many men go through life like that. You can play poker because it's right-coded, you can't enjoy fruity alcoholic drinks because they're women-coded, you can't lick an ice cream cone because it's gay-coded. All day, every day, choosing and judging things based on coding for narrow norms.

One of the great wonders of the internet is the sheer number of people who make a career out of telling you how stupid they are. You would think there's no market for this but the tap never turns off, somehow.

I once knew a Federal bank examiner, and one time someone asked him why we had to KEEP inspecting banks over and over. He basically said every new batch of business school grads invents bank fraud from first principles.

The underlying cause of every bubble - debt masquerading as financial innovation - depends on not just short financial memory & speculative neophytism, but reinventing jargon of finance, like how each generation of kids has new ways to say same things.
