I don't know who needs to hear this, but cops are not allowed to shoot people just because you didn't do what they said.

That is called murder when they do that.

Some cops are working hard to convince people otherwise.

It’s absolutely the right call and fucking surreal that our public schools have to close because of the threat posed by OUR OWN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. I am beyond livid.
This the right call.

Please check in with neighbors who may need support with childcare.

You and your wife drop your 6-year-old off at school. You just moved here. You see ICE terrorizing your new neighbors. You film them, as is your legal right. Your wife complies with orders. She is then shot in the head. You still have to pick up your child later today.

This could be you.

Excellent idea for horror, the most uncanny thing to me is how it has no "front" and "back", even though it should. Why is it so creepy to watch it walk in any direction equally smoothly, changing without warning? What is my brain trying to warn me against?

What do you do when you see someone murdered in front of you by the government? Do you call 911? They'll send an ambulance. Who else will they send, or not? Who do we even want to show up?

What do you do?

This is my CES 2026 thread of AI slop.

First off: astrologers, prepare to be out of a job! This bold new company is bringing AI to the world of Horoscopes and for some reason merging that with a visibly unwell Furby.

Bonus: borderline illegal claims that it can "cure" certain behaviors.

OK this probably doesn't count as a "good" product, but it's the kind of ridiculous vision I love seeing at CES. One man said, "no longer will I go two separate places for water and a modest breeze" and by God he made his dream a reality

Like any niche tech or science topic, it's a struggle to communicate ideas about AI to people unfamiliar with the technology without resulting to anthropomorphizing metaphors, but we should try.
Whether we are participating in local discussions making decisions for our communities or writing for broad audiences we share a responsibility to create and use empowering metaphors rather than misleading language that embeds tech companies’ marketing pitches, write Emily M. Bender and Nanna Inie.

other reporters in the room thought this was a mean thing to ask
First CES panel. Intuit CMO Thomas Ranese is proud of his company's integration with OpenAI, which involves giving AI read/write access to tax data. Since prompt injection attacks are unavoidable, I asked him who will be liable when customer data is exposed: Intuit, OpenAI, etc?

He had no idea.

30 years ago they were like we have to ban song lyrics for the children but it’s full steam ahead for the here’s how to do drugs until you die machine
“ChatGPT started coaching Sam on how to take drugs, recover from them and plan further binges. It gave him specific doses of illegal substances, and in one chat, it wrote, ‘Hell yes—let’s go full trippy mode’”

The last year was very hard as my father was dying. It became that much harder when I discovered that AI played a role in amplifying his physical pain, and perhaps hastening the end of his life. It wasn’t easy to write about what happened, but I’ve tried.

For all that the media has spent years freaking out about what social media does to our brains, I don’t understand why there appears to be little effort to grapple with the fact that these chatbots are, for some not insignificant portion of the population, literally psychosis machines

I actually think it's time to bring back the approach of curated lists and webrings from the early web again. Huge opportunity space for hand curation of information
In an age where AI slop websites have made entire categories of information difficult to find, what we need is Yahoo (or Dmoz): a human-curated list of reliable websites, organized by topic.

For our holiday gift swap at work, I asked for something handmade. My coworker made me a little watercolor sign with my name, an octopus, an owl. I cherish it.

I also made another coworker a bookmark with the timeline of Tudor history. She was floored. It was a really nice moment.

Value humans.
Each time we refuse, we make it easier for others (and ourselves) to refuse again. We can also make positive statements about what we value: authenticity, accountability, human connection, and credit where credit is due (e.g. to artists for their work).
