Israel has just arrested Greta Thunberg and many others.

Statement from the Global Sumud Flotilla:

“People of conscience have been abducted. The flotilla broke no laws. What is illegal is Israel’s genocide, Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, and Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon.”

Close to 65k watching the livefeed from the Global Sumud Flotilla off the coast of Gaza.

Israel seems to be intercepting right now.

We all have finite emotional capacities, and we can mourn for only so many people. If anything, Christians should focus on grieving the suffering of the poorest and the most vulnerable, such as the 72 people killed in Gaza today, especially when we know dozens will be killed again there tomorrow.

What is the point of a Christianity that can't even get its adherents to empathize with mothers holding their starving and dying children in a genocide enabled and encouraged by their governments?

A "God" that can be invoked as a leader of an Empire self-congratulates its bombing of another people is a god that is entirely antithetical to the true God who was revealed in the crucified Christ.

This is the height of blasphemy.
Look I am always here for a religion angle but "I want to thank everybody and in particular God, I want to just say we love you God" is a weird-ass thing to say at a briefing

Whether or not to support a potential war with Iran should be an unambiguous and obvious moral question, if there ever was one. I genuinely don't know what to say to people who cannot see how this is a terrible thing.

AI companies ought to be held accountable for rendering education essentially impossible for future generations. Nobody asked for this, yet we are being forced to accept and cope with this new crappy reality.

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

Big tech is here to derail and destroy education

GenAI is a problem and not a solution to anything
“Technology companies appear to be targeting students as a key demographic for AI tools. Google offers university students a free upgrade of its Gemini tool for 15 months, and OpenAI offers discounts to college students in the US and Canada.”
Revealed: Thousands of UK university students caught cheating using AI
Guardian investigation finds almost 7,000 proven cases of cheating – and experts says these are tip of the iceberg

I really really really loathe how “my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” gets weaponized by these crude, vice-loving pagans. This woman spends half this video mocking the sincere concern raised by her constituents, then the second half trying to turn it into an altar call, and it’s plain old Blasphemy.
Against all odds, Joni Ernst has made it worse

The fundamental flaw of broken authoritarian narcissists (the core of the right-wing coalition) is that they view empathy as a finite resource, such that, if you extend it to one group, you can't extend it to another. They see all of life through a lens of scarcity, competition, & selfishness.
Elon Musk: "The fundamental moral flaw of the left is empathy for the criminals and not empathy for the victims."

"we have to recognize the end of Christendom as something on the order of a historical destiny, one paradoxically prompted by the lingering power of an ancient Christian revolution against the ancient order, and one that could not truly prevail until it had overthrown Christendom as well." - DBH

People who oppose using generative AI to produce content in contexts where expertise *exists* and accuracy *matters* are not “uncomfortable with uncertainty.” They’re people who would rather see a doctor than read a horoscope.

S Augustine, Sermon 103

This is genuinely terrifying. Even more terrifying is that people involved in this thought this was okay.

I hope everyone working on LLMs has reckoned with their role in building a technology that, so far, has offered little to no benefit to humanity — while causing real harm by degrading art, undermining labor in creative industries, and straight up automating political propaganda

The idea that we should be thinking about "AI rights" or "AI welfare" when the most basic rights are being denied to so many human beings in the world at the moment is just baffling.
“Can ChatGPT experience joy or suffering? Does Gemini deserve human rights?” our tech columnist asks. “Many A.I. experts I know would say no, not yet, not even close. But I was intrigued.”
Should We Start Taking the Welfare of A.I. Seriously?
As artificial intelligence systems become smarter, one A.I. company is trying to figure out what to do if they become conscious.

Of course they can be useful. But the problem with LLMs is that they aren't even close to being useful enough (and probably will never be) to justify the immense social, economic, and environmental cost.
There are a lot of critiques of LLMs that I agree with but "they suck and aren't useful" doesn't really hold water.

I understand people not using them because of social, economic, and environmental concerns. And I also understand people using them because they can be very useful.

Thoughts?

The difference between #AI errors and confabulation in humans is that in producing false or misleading information, the LLM is functioning precisely as intended. Nothing has gone wrong because nothing in the mechanism regulates alignment with the truth. We might as well say #LLMs always confabulate…
"It would be more appropriate to say that [LLMs] ‘confabulate’. In humans, confabulation involves the unintentional – and usually linguistic – fabrication of content: making stuff up without realising that one is doing so. It is primarily about *doing*, rather than *experiencing*."
