He's promising to protect the integrity of the data by firing statisticians who follow established methods of data collection and processing whenever those methods yield numbers that don't please the boss.
Kevin Hassett: "The data can't be propaganda. The data has to be something you can trust, bc decision-makers throughout the economy trust that these are the data that they can build a factory because they believe, or cut interest rates. If the data aren't that good, it's a real problem for the US."

If we can "avoid a government shutdown" by voting for this CR, then why is the entire Department of Education closed today? Why is USAID closed? Why are hundreds of billions in grant contracts frozen?

We are already in the shutdown. And your votes DON'T stop it. In fact, they allow it to expand.

one thing i keep thinking about is how there is simply no way to design a constitutional system that can resist authoritarian incursion if participants in that system do not actually care that much

I'm convinced this is a genuine problem. The reality of Trump is so cartoonishly, comically awful that an absolutely neutral description sounds like a hit piece, even to me. So if you're at all predisposed to think of press as biased, factual reporting looks like some relentless vendetta.
feel like one problem of Trump is that describing him objectively sounds like you're insulting him

How’s this WSJ take aging
WSJ this morning. lol at the last bit.

"Leaders on both sides need to stop describing the stakes of the election in apocalyptic terms. Democracy won't end if one or the other candidate is elected. Fascism is not aborning if Mr. Trump wins, unless you have little faith in American institutions."

It’s legitimately embarrassing for a publication called ‘Politico’ to have a writer who doesn’t know anything about FDR.
a good example of how the world is getting dumber. the new politico playbook writer didn't know who FDR was until a reader told him about that whole "new deal" thing. this newsletter is read by every important person in DC.

Anecdotally, in DC there was a lot of advertising in favor of the push for more flights out of DCA, basically framed as a good idea for consumers with no potential downsides.

I'm the executive at Subway who gives notes on the ads demanding "more splashing on the Italian dressing" and "drop the meatball from a much greater height." I don't have any kind of degree or expertise, I just like watching sandwiches bounce in weird ways and the founder hired me in 1983.
