I really do hate the term 'metroidbrania'. I think so do many of you. Let's nip it in the bud before it becomes something people are financially invested in.
Against 'Metroidbrania': a Landscape of Knowledge Games
What are knowledge games? How do we relate them to each other? What sub-genres exist – and which ones might be implied?

Personally, I believe that institutions that purport to support or otherwise celebrate an industry have a responsibility to pursue material action that backs that support up.

Here, we have an example of the most abject failure to uphold that responsibility, and it's frankly embarrassing. (1/5)
EXCLUSIVE on @gamedeveloper.bsky.social: not only has The Game Awards not nominated a Future Class for 2025, it's told alumni it "does not have any active programming plans" for the award.

The Future Class page was taken down sometime this year—eliminating a definitive archive of honorees.
The Game Awards' Future Class program remains on ice
Future Class organizer Emily Weir has informed past honorees that The Game Awards has no active plans for the program.

It's cool how we keep proving over and over and over again that there's a significant market for narrative-heavy, character-driven, single-player experiences in video games and publishers just categorically refuse to believe us

It's important to remember that this is how executives in the games industry are talking about art. The workers at Boss Fight and Netflix Games at large deserve better.

Fun narrative exercise to do with your team: all the characters in your game are now muppets except for ONE who remains a human. Which character is it?

In space, death is contagious. When we die, the Scarabs decontaminate our ships and lay us to rest.

But when Dalia gets cleanup request from her childhood home, she finds something she’s never seen before: a contamination that doesn’t want to be cleaned.

This is Ambrosia Sky.

As a permalancer: if you are EVER verbally offered ANY kind of promise (a raise, a contract extension, full-time employment), IMMEDIATELY ask for it in writing and be low-key relentless about it. As someone who has been strung along too many times: they can't keep getting away with this.

Unfortunately, it really isn't that surprising: these robber barons are going to lay off workers in the places with the highest costs of living (and thus labor), highest healthcare costs, and scant labor laws. That describes North America perfectly.

It's past time we fight back.

It should not be lost on us that the recent highlighting of small team size in the press has started during a time of tremendous undercutting of labor. I am absolutely thrilled for Team Cherry but we should always keep an eye on framing. Games are made by people. Often: lots of them!
