it's genuinely stunning to me you'd keep a game in the hopper for a decade and then do huge layoffs after a single month. a month is nothing in live service terms. less than nothing.

I feel conflicted because we definitely need better protections online for minors *but* instead it's just surveillance nonsense.

Best pitch I've heard for improved online safety would involve loosening laws on hacking/modifying commercial software.

Please make sure you check with your local immigrant watchdog org before using whistles in your area. Using them can get in the way of their work getting info on the person being detained, and they might not recommend it
"I print whistles because reality still matters; whistles get neighbors to come running, make sure enough people are recording, so when the regime pretends there’s only one camera angle of Renee Good’s death, we know the truth."

I've seen some similar projects, but IMO this seems to better capture some of the fine-grained detail

I am pulling my hair out about how we are being told to rely on technology that will change our lives that it seems nobody can be honest about.
This piece is deeply depressing and also extremely dumb?
She says she makes six figures because she pumped out hundreds of books with AI. But the books aren’t how she’s making that. She “offers a course” on how to churn out AI slop books and charges people for it.
So, a bog standard grift
fuck this lady, fuck the nyt reporter, fuck all of this. fuck amazon for introducing the KU page read model that makes this possible, fuck our tech overlords.

Great piece but I’m still stunned that anyone with experience in film production can label this project a success. It’s dry, boring, repetitive, unengaging, and unsettling.

If it was cheaper to produce than getting a film crew in that’s only because they cut the people who could make it good!!!
I talked to someone involved with the production of that AI-generated Revolutionary War docuseries for Ars. Learned a lot about the process, including how it still takes "weeks" of prompts and re-prompts to generate minutes of usable video.

Production source says it takes "weeks" to produce just minutes of usable video.

NEW: ProbablyMonsters—which we reported on last year for alleged mismanagement and waves of unannounced layoffs—is still seemingly laying off employees.

Some worked on Ire: A Prologue, which CEO Harold Ryan said last year was meant to drive interest in a new franchise.
