Orgs with budgets really need to invest in facilitation training for staff, rather than just pushing people into the deep end without a sense of how to do the work. Because everyone has a shittier time when folks do not get some advice and instruction.

Back when I was covering various movements in 2011-2014, I was mostly using smart devices to tweet things in real time from the ground, while also taking a few photos here and there and writing about it later. While the visuals I tweeted weren't good, they were still a record of what happened.

We should talk about how to properly archive and provide access to digital history, particularly when it comes to things that only appear online. With Twitter specifically here, this means that any visuals folks posted covering multiple movements are ostensibly gone.
This is bleak as hell.
Twitter is erasing history and any accounting of it. The present and the past in the digital world we are building will be a blank hole as the egos of fragile men and capitalism crush out our ability to tell coherent and honest stories a out the present and the past.

There's just no other place that's been around for over a decade where you can (or could) log on, see an emerging situation in the news and find global or national opinions easily, and tell at a glance whether their opinion was of significant value (even if it challenged your own.)

Ferguson was my first BIG time of learning that many (all?) major media outlets were full of shit. I'd watch something on a livestream on Twitter and/or people live-tweeting and see a completely different story told on the big news channels that night.
Probably my first “oh shit, we’re in a new world” moment with Twitter was watching the police riots in Ferguson, MO happen is real time while traditional news sources had already clocked out for the day.
One of the most useful things about Twitter in its heyday was the ability to see (much of the time) credible news breaking in real time. There were plenty of times I (and many others) were able to see something happen as it started and get down to it to cover it. That's gone now.

Ok so I just sounded off on Tw about how deepfake/AI and manipulation of videos will create so many terrible situations which will affect our laws, court cases, elections, support of the government, etc.

Someone told me that this app may seem very empty because of this default setting that requires replies to have 2 likes or more before they show up.
Indeed! I changed it so that all replies show up, and suddenly the place seems much more lively. I highly recommend changing it in your settings.

I’m basically following only people I followed on Twitter. Not against, but not looking for new folks, just hoping to not lose touch or lose the voices I love over there. I know it won’t be ALL the same here but that’s life, I accept it.
