it really is appropriate to view this as potentially the biggest privacy and cybersecurity scandal in American history
“Thomas Shedd, a former Tesla engineer who has been tapped to lead a technology team at G.S.A., told some staff members that he hoped to put all federal contracts into a centralized system so they could be analyzed by artificial intelligence”
Our deep dive into Musk's takeover: Even some officials who like what Musk is doing feel helpless to hold him accountable. His allies are diving in to agencies, gaining access to systems, planning layoffs, and proposing a sweeping AI initiative to review contracts. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/03/u...

Not for nothing, but Direct File by the IRS was one of the best things the USG has done in years — it allowed millions of Americans to stop paying predatory fees to TurboTax. The literal only people who oppose it are TurboTax lobbyists.

There is an emerging conventional wisdom that identity politics this is why Harris lost. It is coming from the people who dislike identity politics. This is more about their motivated reasoning, than anything Harris did.

Like clockwork, Maureen Dowd picked up Seth Moulton’s trash about trans people and ran with it.

Just wait until this hits the housing market.

Building material costs are still absurd, and I imagine will get even worse with anticipatory ordering like this even if Trump breaks his promises on tariffs.

And then he's planning to deport a major portion of the construction workforce.

I don’t know what to do with my hopes and dreams now that it’s clear they don’t matter. I don’t know what anyone could have done differently, and I don’t know how anything that any of us do can matter. It doesn’t feel like there’s a future for all of us.

If Trump wins, there will be efforts to blame Russian interference or the Harris campaign or Biden, etc. That's all fair. But we need to be clear eyed that a huge swath of America likes what Trump is selling. Transphobia. Mass deportation. That's what he ran on. And here we are.

whatever happens, we need to accept that fascism is popular. racism is popular. misogyny is popular.

I’m not sure how democracy moves towards progress when reactionaries have the votes.

I see ways for Democrats to come back in the future, but there won't be a liberal SCOTUS for decades. Don't like the campaign system where billionaires can fund super PACs and erase whatever small donors gave? Too bad, it's here to stay.
He ran the worst campaign I have ever seen.

That it might not matter is... just a lot to sit with.

Really seems that being a singularly worthless man is still a major advantage over being an exceptionally impressive woman.
