Behind any statistic you can trot out for #WorldAIDSDay is a person. A story. A life lived and lost. Don’t know Paul (or Terry) or @ajaxsinger.bsky.social for that matter. But here is one story and like all of them, it’s worth reading. Thanks for sharing it Constantine.
LONG RAMBLING EMOTIONAL THREAD:

It's World AIDS Day. Since the Administration has decided to keep it quiet, I'd like to share my introduction to AIDS.

I grew up in Seattle. My mom remarried a man who had a brother who was a King County Sheriff's Deputy. His name was Terry and he was gay. 1/x

This is a 19-paragraph article to which 7 journalists contributed; it contains not a single hint that there is any impropriety in the President of the United States directing the Justice Department to investigate his political adversaries.

One thing about Mamdani’s election that I’m going to be carrying for a while: alllllll the fuckin bad faith ass attacks he had to endure and he paid that shit dust. He never capitulated on his message or his stated commitments. So incredibly encouraging.

Stand. On. Yours. Stand. On. Ours.

He said his audience should "stop transgender people" and "buy a lot of bullets."

In 2024, he said a bible verse that called for queer people to be stoned to death was "god's perfect law when it came to sexual matters."

You tell me that wasn't violent. You tell me those weren't threats.
“So what if he disagreed with you, he didn’t deserve to die”

But he thought I did.

This isn’t disagreement. It’s someone who was not only opposed to my existence but was called a good and faithful servant by the church for doing it.

I don’t have to mourn that. And asking me to is violence too.

The White House has already previewed their legal argument in the military deployment at the border context; they argue it's not a violation of the Posse Comitatus Act because the troops are not arresting the person, merely temporarily detaining them for local law enforcement to arrive.
BREAKING: US Marines deployed to Los Angeles have carried out the first known detention of a civilian, the US military confirms.

It was confirmed to Reuters after they shared this image with the US military.

You can't call immigrants lazy moochers looking for government handouts and then round them up at Home Depots where you know they are looking for work.

You can't say immigrants don't follow the rules and then round them up in courthouses where they are following the rules.

Get your lies straight.

The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

Trump in 2020: We have to go by the laws. We can't move in the National Guard. I can call insurrection but there's no reason to ever do that, even in a Portland case. We can't call in the National Guard unless we're requested by a governor.

It is completely unlawful for ICE to turn away members of Congress like this. The law could not be more clear; no member of Congress may be denied access to a facility where ICE is detaining someone, and they cannot be required to schedule in advance. Surprise inspections must be surprise.
If ICE were acting entirely within the law and maintaining good conditions in all its facilities, they would not be turning Congresspeople away.

But they clearly aren't.

We need someone in a leadership position on the House Oversight Committee who isn't afraid to stand up and hold this administration accountable.

That person is Jasmine Crockett.

I support Jasmine Crockett in the leadership position on the Oversight Committee.

I know there's a lot going on right now, but when the Pope, from halfway around the world, is more forcefully calling out Trump's horrific anti-migrant actions, that's a pretty clear sign you need to step it up on the messaging.

Happy New Year.

2024 was a difficult year for transgender people, and yet at the turning of the year, I find myself holding on tightly to the small moments of peace we have right now.

2025 will be difficult, and it is essential that we find space for peace and rest to prepare for it.

It’s wild how many editors used to reach out when there was a new state trying to curtail the rights of trans people, and how that just kinda stopped as more than half of U.S. states adopted anti trans legislation between 2022-23.
Work has been drying up for trans writers for years. Of course, part of this is bc work has been drying up for all journalists.

However, with trans issues as the top priority of the Republican party there's a strong journalistic argument for increasing or maintaining that capacity.

Today it ended when the most corrupt cop in history took his life.

Which is why Bluesky needs to yeet Jesse Singal out of here. And to yeet JKR on sight when she brings her hate brigade over here. It should be non-negotiable.
It's extremely hard to convey to the average cis person just how bad the harassment of trans people on social media has gotten and how aggressively we're targeted, because if you've not been on the receiving end of it for years, you can't really grasp how relentless it is, and how isolating it is.
Since about 2018 it became hard to say anything about being trans on that platform without constant demands by clearly anti trans groups to debate them over our own experiences or prove ourselves. This was after maybe 2 decades of us using the internet to share our experiences with normal cis people
