The idea that religion can be kept in private, separate from the public sphere, reflects a modern post-Enlightenment definition of religion, and thus will justifiably be felt by many non-Protestants as an imposition of Protestant religiosity onto the rest of us.

I would like to talk a little bit about the experience of living in the Roman ghetto in Renaissance Europe for you guys. Just to give a sense of why the idea that Nazis learned from the US is so offensive. A thread of uncertain length.

To start, the Roman ghetto was deeply overcrowded swampland.

If you’ve heard the “the Nazis got their ideas from the US segregationists” I beg you to please stop. This is both false and it minimizes historical European antisemitism in a misguided attempt to emphasize the nature of US anti-Black racism.

It’s horrific without comparison to Nazism.
May I politely encourage you to reconsider this framing. It is inaccurately stated and suggests consistent and strong linkages that do not exist.

The Nazis did not “get their ideas” from confederate laws. Antisemitism and anti-Jewish laws existed in Europe long before the Confederacy…

Because Judaism isn’t a religion. It’s the cultural practice of Jews.
Are you saying that one can be Jewish in the religious sense (rather than in the ethnic sense) absent any belief in the monotheistic deity?

The genuine hot take is that there are hundreds of Holocaust movies but hardly any about centuries of non-Holocaust antisemitism not because "the Jews" want it, but rather because the heroes of the Holocaust movies tend to be non-Jews saving Jews, which is what audiences like to see.

Look, I'm not saying this is going to be a thing tomorrow. Obviously it's early days. But I repeat that there is *so much* incredibly cool, potentially game-changing medical research being done at the same exact time that Trump is needlessly stopping so much of it dead in its tracks.
I thought it was a joke but it's not. There's an actual study. Researchers at Penn & Finland engineered gum with antiviral bean proteins that ⬇️ viral load in the mouth the main site of replication for many viruses, including SarsCov2, HSV-1 &2, & influenza.

But for serious, Christians invented the distinction between "culture" and "religion" as a tool for proselytizing, why do so many of them now just literally describe their faith as, like, just what Christianity is but get *real* insistent that they Don't Have A Religion and Aren't Christian
I genuinely believe this is a result of how Christians, like atheists, have so internalized their faith as *the* template for "religion" that they think if they stop observing some specific denomination that belief in Jesus as Messiah is somehow Religiously Neutral

Remember that ALL religions are based on the same 3 principles:

1. We do not heed Heavenly voices when they tell us how to interpret the law.

2. Real property is transferred by payment of money, but movable property is transferred by the act of lifting.

3. No one can agree what #3 is.

If you want to understand how the Holocaust has been weaponized to erase Jews from the story of their own murders, this story is instructive: "Cincinnati rabbi disinvited from rally against Nazis" (he was a progressive who failed a bigoted progressive purity test on Israel)

The Democrats can win back 2 seats, meaning no more Speaker Johnson. If we win the 3rd seat in NY-21, we have Speaker Jeffries.

There is no such thing as a “Judeo-Christian prayer”. Part of the reason Jewish Americans have historically been such strong advocates for the separation of Church and State is that Jews DO NOT WANT TO BE FORCED TO RECITE CHRISTIAN PRAYERS.
