Imagine interviewing a victim of torture and independently confirming the details of his torture and then being told you can’t broadcast it because the people who ordered the torture wouldn’t give their side of the story.

I know it’s too much to expect them to know their history, but if the American Revolution had a motto, it definitely would not have been “immigrants go home.”

It would have been “get your fucking soldiers out of our cities.”
America... boy, I dunno.

Sometimes there is a good sentence or two in the NYT.

It really can not be emphasized enough that "exaggerating the danger of the left" is a key, central tactic of aspiring fascists. Look back at every country that slid into authoritarianism & you'll find a campaign like this preceding it. Every time. It's part of the script.
How Trumpworld inflates the perceived danger of the left

I mean yes this is funny, but the fact that these unconstitutional stormtroopers are so directionless that they literally stand around waiting for random nonwhite delivery guys to bike past them is just pathetic. No mandate, no mission, no clue. Just racism.

and failed to disappear a food delivery guy.
It needed to be scored.

Why are ICE officers so bad at their jobs? This paper gives the reason: they were ALWAYS mediocre, incompetent, or dishonorable cops. Signing on to the secret police, being willing to do the "ugly" jobs, gives them a career advancement path those qualities blocked under more moral systems.
So many echoes from this article for US politics....

Lot going on in Chicago. ICE raids. Both plummeting crime rates (Patel) and a criminal war zone (Trump). But this might go unnoticed.

Yesterday, in the suburb of Berwyn, a man shot up a car in front of a middle school with an assault rifle, killing two.

something that stands out about this is just how cheap it is for us to have world-leading scientific capacity

we spent ~6.75 trillion last year, and the combined budgets for NIH, NSF and NASA are barely more than 1% of that

what an incredible waste to lose it all for a drop in the bucket
There are 2 previous historical cases of countries destroying their science and universities, crippling them for decades: Lysenkoism in the USSR and Nazi Germany. The Trump administration will be the 3rd.
It's not just budgets but research, institutions, expertise, and training the next generation.
