Hundreds of international students have just received an email telling them their visas have been revoked.

The ‘justification’ is campus activism or social media posts.

The Signal leak is a prime moment for Democrats to get caught trying. Call for resignations or impeachment hearings or both. Be omnipresent in the media demanding and explaining accountability measures. Don’t let this fade away. Treat this the way the GOP treated Hillary’s emails. Make it a thing.

This is a very basic and absolutely essential point that virtually nobody, even within the university, ever raises. We’re on the brink of a massive loss of disciplinary skills and knowledge — a loss that we are, by and large, choosing, without even discussing it as anything more than a market shift.
I'm very concerned that some rare skills will become even rarer. I appreciate that people think that there might be more important things to do than study rare topics, but once the knowledge goes, it goes. /6

I’m so tired of hearing Rubio & other rightwingers now claiming that if you’re on a green card you’re a ‘guest’ in this country. BS. You’re a lawful permanent resident. The clue is in the name. If someone is a permanent resident in your home, are they the same as the guests who come and go? Come on.

There are so many betrayals in Chuck Schumer's vote for the CR, but perhaps none worse than going against the request of the federal workers who've been most harmed by the on-going coup.

The largest federal workers union asked @schumer.senate.gov to vote against the CR and he just ignored them.

The very idea of the university is at stake here. Columbia must not give in to these demands. If Trump is successful here, he will feel
empowered to do this to many other colleges and universities.
NEW letter to Columbia from Trump admin lists demands for “continued financial relationship” with the US government”:

—Suspend or expel students for Hamilton Hall protest
—“Time, place, and manner rules”
—Mask ban
—Address “anti-Zionist” discrimination

The entire business model of American R1 universities is not viable without restoration of federal funding, & every individual institution pretending it can solve this problem alone is also not viable. University presidents need to be speaking out, collectively & loudly about this, in DC, right now.

There are also not actually enough *other jobs* out there to accommodate all of the people in government, academia, aid, and NGO jobs that the Musk/Trump junta are currently rendering unemployed.

Just because many will want to make a career pivot out doesn’t mean they’ll be able to.
making the educated bourgeois class and the CIA and the FBI and the military mad at you within a month of seizing power is certainly a choice that the Musk/Trump junta is making
Don’t forget destroying the military and both your interior and exterior security services, and pissing off your neighbors and other countries that know all of your military and security secrets and a very vested interest in not supporting you ALL AT ONCE is typically the start of a glorious reign.

Now, multiple scholars tell me their applications have been re-assigned to their original study sections, in a reversal of instructions NIH officials gave reviewers last week. #AcademicSky

Apologies for this long post I put together to explain to non-scientists the impact of NIH cuts: Last night, an “atomic bomb” was dropped on the biomedical science community. We were informed that effective immediately, indirect costs on NIH grants (both current and future) would be fixed at 15%.

Cuts to NIH spending framed as saving $4 billion.

But NIH funding generates returns -not just in terms of improved health- but economic returns.
On average each dollar spent generates over $2 in economic activity.
In MO, $800m in NIH funding supports $1.89 billion in economic activity, 8,500 jobs.

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

This is one of the biggest attacks on science we have ever seen. It could dismantle the biomedical research system, shut down clinical trials, and halt development of treatments.
