Posted this same thing on Twitter and got a wild amount of illiterate preteens screeching “don’t make this about your shitty game”. The children are so joyless these days.

some of the meshes used in the spawning effects were made in blender, too, which i briefly touched on a few years ago so it wasn't ENTIRELY alien to me, but my friend mars also helped show me quicker ways to do stuff

i grew up going to christian summer camps in central texas. so many of my leftist friends across the state came from republican families. you can't judge children for the political choices of their parents because you don't know who they'll be when they grow up.

So I just learned about this 100% R&D salary tax credit that expired in the US in 2022.

This... was massive for game companies. This would have been a MAJOR factor in the tech & game industry-wide layoffs and contraction we've seen over the last few years, and I had no idea

In recent weeks, video game publishers Take-Two and EA both warned investors about potential "reputational" risks to the use of gen-AI in games. It's a problem that all game companies will soon need to confront: Players hate genAI.

my only take on the game prices discourse is that "more expensive games make the scene less accessible, which sucks" and "it makes sense for some games to go up in price relative to their dev costs" are not opposing ideas to me. i don't have any answers tho. i wish a lot of things were different.

Activision had a whole process to send in tips to corporate about "indie games we had heard of" so they could snipe them. I sent in every indie I knew of and as far as I know they never contacted anyone.
I've heard this from biz dev guys before and balatro or star dew it totally didn't look like it would have been a success.
I don't know why they think they would have been able to identify the business potential if they saw it pitched
Publisher bizdev people at events like GDC and Dice trying to sign "the next balatro" should realize that, statistically, the developer of "the next Balatro" you need to be talking to isn't at GDC or Dice talking to bizdev guys seeking 2m+ in funding

do these people not go outside? are these people completely cut off from normal society? there are trans folks in my friend groups, at the places I work, and at the businesses I frequent. it feels like you could only say it's "inconsequential" if you don't have any trans people in your life at all.

This is 100% true but unlike a lot of the replies I also don’t think standardized titles and workflows in games is particularly possible or desirable.
just as an outsider with an interest in video game development, and coming from the film industry, it really feels like the game industry has no standardized workflow. every new project gets a bespoke production system with a lot of uncertainty about tasks, roles and who should be doing what
Why do video games cost so much to make these days? A recent NYT article pinned bloated budgets on the graphical arms race, but that's only a small part of the equation. The real problem? Rampant mismanagement.
