talked to a guy this morning who was excited about being able to replace his team's long-time composer with generative AI. i truly believe these people will not see the light of heaven.

big thanks to the hosts of The Silent Discographer for having me, and for allowing me to reveal my secret identity as The #1 Monster-By-R.E.M. Defender. like many of the guitar parts on Monster, this podcast episode is best listened to when it's run through a tremolo effect pedal

I saw a screening of the 4k restoration of Angel's Egg a couple nights ago, and the biggest impression it left on me was how economically it realized it's vision. Two characters, often shot from far away. Limited dialogue. Long shots, relatively few cuts. Clever re-use of material.

fantastic thread detailing one of game audio's trickier problems
Audio (sound effects, music, and dialogue) has a weird relationship with temp assets, mostly because of issues revolving around human psychology.

Problem #1: How do you communicate that something you're hearing is temp?
The annoying thing about the "oh we left a placeholder" generative AI slop excuse is that that is EXACTLY NOT how you should be using placeholders. Anything "not obviously terrible with a panicked hurried half-awake glance" is getting shipped.

whether games are action or turn based; developed in america, japan or china; whether they're on steam or console or gacha games you play on your phone; have an audience of millions or an audience of double digits; what's important is that games are about choosing one from a list of three things

tonight i found out that the Buca Di Beppo i spent my early 20's working at has been emptied of its knickknacks and is set to be demolished in two days. i used to worry that i'd be stuck working there forever. but in two days it'll be physically impossible for that to happen to me. so that's cool

games people, if you could talk to a game developer about their craft for an hour, who would it be, and what would you ask them about?

i'm freshly unemployed, so i've been looking into my health insurance options. with the ACA subsidies, i'm looking at bare bones insurance for $400 a month. without those subsidies? honestly not sure. i can get on Maff's insurance for $700 a month, and that might end up being the cheaper option.

The fact that there is any classical saxophone repertoire at all is down to the WPA, which paired a young composer named Paul Creston up with an artistic partner and sent them on your with others. It gave birth to a small but important branch of musical literature. The U.S. Government did that, once
