Secretary for Security Chris Tang:
⚠️ The protective nets' fire-protection performed up to spec, but the foam boards installed on windows surrounding the buildings were highly flammable.
The extreme heat caused the windows to burst, allowing the fire to enter buildings

When people from Hong Kong / who are familiar with Hong Kong tell you it is not the bamboo but the corrupted system is responsible, listen. Don't shut your ear because "it is difficult to understand" or it is different from your reasoning. 2/

A few takeaways from my reporting Hong Kong lecture:
Context is everything.
Talk & listen to local people (not just your taxi driver).
But always consider their safety.
Give credit where you can.
Know what you don’t know.
Acquiring In-depth local knowledge requires time, experience & humility.
I hope the Western media uses the same standard of investigation and reasoning of the Grenfell Tower fire when they explain the catastrophic residential blocks fire in Tai Po, Hong Kong. 1/

International media, you can do better than this.

"Bamboo" is maybe exotic and a compelling hook but it is too easy. The real story here is the growing culture of corruption, including a lack of accountability and oversight, that enabled a chain of human errors that led to this disaster.

`genzplyr` is an alternative syntax for `dplyr` that replaces boring old function names with GenZ slang. Your data wrangling is about to hit different.

I’m going to keep mentioning how heavily people leaned on the “actually, poor Black people don’t go to elite schools, we need more investment at the community level” argument when affirmative action was before the court, and how fucking silent they are now.

Republicans used a massive propaganda bullhorn to exploit the electorate's fear and ignorance about trans people

the answer to that is compassion, media reform, education, and aggressively defending ALL civil rights.

People are running stats on LLM-generated participants and think they’re being social scientists when in fact they’re technically just playing a very strange video game. This is like saying you’re doing math research because you’re playing sudoku.

there's also a belief that something you've heard in person is more 'authentic,' even when the person you've heard it from is repeating something they heard at a conference from someone else who heard it from someone else who got it from a New York Times column.
It’s not just DC but elite America in general.

CEOs, VCs, or bankers all get their information from the same elite rumor mills: information reliability is based on the prestige of the person more than anything else.

The average CEO will pay more weight to a Jeff Bezos offhand remark than experts

Don't forget that the Democratic party is responsible for this. It happened due to a bill coauthored by Democrats, passed under Democratic control, and signed into law by a Democratic president.

It started as Trump's idea, but that just makes it all the more embarrassing that Dems fell for it.
