Love this reminder. It’s so easy to blame the food instead of our habits. Slowing down and actually enjoying the meal makes such a big difference. Thank you Shelley for this advice! #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social
Thanksgiving foods are not the issue. How fast you eat and how much you keep piling on the plate matter more. Slow down, taste your food, and stop at comfortable instead of stuffed. Enjoy the day without overthinking it. #RealWorldNutrition

This Thanksgiving, I’m excited for the classics like turkey and mashed potatoes, but I’m especially looking forward to my mom’s traditional Lebanese dishes. Her fattoush and Lebanese rice with meat and nuts are amazing! #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

This relates directly to what we learned this week about weight stigma. Diet culture impacts everyone, but not equally. I like how she makes the point that the true challenge is to consider why we are afraid of larger bodies. That shift in mindset is just as important as any change. #beh353
I've seen a whole lot of content lately about people realising they aren't actually fat, that diet culture has just been lying to them. That's great for you all, but please remember what these declarations say to people who are actually fat.

I liked what you said about starting small, and thought it was interesting how Tom talked about gradually increasing his goals instead of staying with the same small ones or all of a sudden huge goals. It shows how progress comes from building on early habits and letting them to grow with you.
Tom's story shows that starting off with small changes & increasing them throughout our journey is how we can reach our goals. If he set really strict rules for himself right away, that would not have lasted, but bc he was patient & made slight adjustments he succeeded. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

Tom's story taught me that real transformation starts with a single sustainable habit, not a perfect diet. His regular Chick-fil-A salad routine significantly boosted his health. It reminded me that small, lasting changes can make a major impact in long-term health. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Love these ideas! I learned this week that metabolism changes a lot after weight loss, so finding sustainable snacks like these really helps in the long run. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Yes, thats so true! It’s so sad how often people think shame helps when it actually does the opposite. I’m also trying to be more mindful about how I talk about peoples weight and health.
I learned this week that fat shaming actually makes things worse. Fat shaming can lead to depression, anxiety, and even overeating. Moving forward, I will focus on empathy and understanding when talking about health and weight, both in my life/daily life and work/school. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

I had no idea your metabolism can slow for years after big weight loss. It makes keeping weight off way harder than people think thats why people should not fat shame others because they really do not know what the person is going through. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Oh this is super relatable! One barrier I struggle with is the lack of time to plan, shop, and cook healthy meals. Thanks for this list, it’s a good reminder that even small steps like planning ahead can make healthy eating easier. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Haha this is so relatable! As a commuter I always end up coming here too. You can always find me at the Longwood Galleria food court. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social
My biggest barrier to healthy eating is lack of time to plan, shop, prepare, and cook healthy foods. I spend most of my time in class and studying. When I don't have time to cook and pack lunch, I buy food from the Longwood Galleria even though it is not as healthy.

One barrier I relate to is the lack of time to plan, shop, and cook healthy meals. Between school, work, and commuting, I always end up choosing quick foods (fast food or snacks) over balanced food. Convenience usually wins, even when I want to try and eat better. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

This is so interesting. The disclaimers are always there but barely noticeable. It’s wild how companies can make supplements sound super effective just by using the right wording, even when the claims aren’t really backed up. And its allowed! #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social
Supplements can make structure/function claims, but they must have a disclaimer. I found this zinc supplement in my cabinet, which displays the disclaimer in the fine print on the back of the bottle. Manufacturers can follow the rules and still manipulate the marketing.

That’s a great point. People often buy certain types of vitamins because they sound better, without realizing that the body processes them in connected ways. It shows that how nutrients actually work is more complicated than what supplement ads suggest. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social
It's still a little bewildering to me that the same folks pushing designer vitamins with methylated folates also emphasize methyl B12, despite evidence of upper axial ligand removal from any B12 you consume & that the cobalamin is accepting the methyl group from folate b4 transfer to homocysteine.

I found it interesting that getting vitamins from real food is much more effective than taking supplements. Whole foods provide fiber, antioxidants, and other nutrients that work together to support health in ways that vitamins in pill form cannot #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Healthline’s "25 Simple Tips to Make Your Diet Healthier" breaks down small changes that actually work, like cooking at home, eating slower, and planning meals. The advice feels real and not very extreme, and it’s written by nutrition experts, not influencers so its fact #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

Keto diet focuses on very low carb and high fat intake, forcing the body to enter ketosis. While it may lead to quick weight loss, it causes fatigue, and nutrient deficiencies. Is the short-term success of keto worth the possible long-term health risks? #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

This is a great reminder! Choosing oils like olive or canola instead of solid fats is an easy change that supports heart health. They add healthy fats and vitamin E, and over time those small swaps can really make a difference. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

I'll make my sandwiches more nutrient-dense by swapping white bread for whole grain (more fiber & B vitamins), adding spinach & tomato (extra vitamin C & K), and using grilled chicken instead of deli meat (lean protein, less sodium) #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

24-hr recall: water; movie popcorn+Coke Zero; CAVA bowl; more Coke Zero; sunflower seeds+an apple. Easy to list, hard to estimate portions (popcorn size, CAVA sauces, seed handfuls). Surprised my eating was event-based + how often I grabbed diet soda. Likely high sodium. @beh353.bsky.social #beh353

A fun fact I learned is that glucose from carbs is the brain’s main fuel. It’s the only nutrient that crosses the blood–brain barrier, except during starvation when ketones take over. This is why carbs are key for brain energy and function. #beh353 @beh353.bsky.social

One thing that stood out to me is remembering that one study is just one piece of a bigger puzzle. Results don’t always apply to everyone equally since factors like age, genetics, and stress can change outcomes. I’ll look for context instead of assuming one study proves everything. #beh353 @beh353
