when I was 6 my stepdad gave me a Commodore 64k. I could tell my mom was very nervous I was going to damage such an expensive gift. He showed me how to load the OS via BASIC and then said “don’t be afraid to play with it, you can’t break the computer by typing code.”
What’s the lore behind choosing your career path ?

On this Trans Day of Remembrance, I would have you remember that there are trans people alive who need your action now, not your reflective words later.

Remembering us is not enough.

One of the things most quietly grieved amongst practitioners is the half-century of history and work in learning systems and technologies which have historically been categorized as “AI”, and they’ve all been run over by LLMs, and by the hype cycles the industry has *built* around LLMs. A huge loss.
There are quite a few ethical and justice oriented AI people who talk about having lifelong love for a vision of AI that is being trashed by the current thing, and I wonder if any of those positive visions have been articulated somewhere? What is it ppl think AI is supposed to be instead of this?

I will keep saying this until I am blue in the face; we have been in a disinfo/propaganda war with Russia since 2014, & it's one of the few things their military is genuinely excellent at, & we're fucking LOSING

Farage, Trump, Brexit, Transphobia, the rise of the far right - they're pushing it all
Note that if it's happening in the Fediverse it is ABSOLUTELY DEFINITELY happening here on Bsky.
Since 15 Sept IFTAS has tracked a network of over 300 Mastodon accounts engaged in a high-volume propaganda campaign, promoting pro-Russian narratives:

My daughter just turned 15, the same age as the MC in my debut YA SF that came out 15 years ago. (Yes, I had a debut novel and firstborn in the same month.)

I’m re-releasing a new edition of that novel now. 15 years later. The ebook’s out November 15. (Print coming soon.)

The children of my first cousins are my nieces and nephews and call me “aunt”. the children of my close friends are also nieces and nephews and also call me aunt, this isn’t new or unusual.
In a bit of a tense moment, one of the La Mega co-hosts presses Mamdani on why he "lied" about his "aunt" having been scared to ride the subway after 9/11 while wearing a hijab.

Mamdani says it was "not a lie" because he refers to his father's cousin as his "aunt."

We will NEVER get to 3.5% if people keep waiting for a revolution to get involved. Guess what, this is the revolution. No, it doesn’t look at that fantasy book, SciFi series or graphic novel you read, and it’s not going to.

It’s going to look like this.

BODILY AUTONOMY: does your body belong to you, or to your parents/husband/state?

PRIVACY: do you owe everyone you meet a full medical history?

EXPRESSION: to what extent is your clothing a legal matter?

It’s my turn to bring class breakfast so I’m busting out the world’s best pumpkin bread recipe. Unfuckupable, works gluten free, is good with dairy free chocolate chips added, the secret ingredient is sugar.

This is a towering, craggy pumpkin bread with a crisp cinnamon sugar lid that is impossible not to pick off in deeply satisfying bark-like flecks.
