This kind of thing is baked deeply into the character of the Times. It reminds me of the 70s and 80s, when Abe Rosenthal was the executive editor and wouldn't let the Times report anything about gay people, including AIDS.

From what I've seen, the best analysis of this definitional game played by DHS is from @prisonpolicy.org. Their report back in July showed that ICE's public detention numbers capture about 2/3 of the actual number of people in ICE custody.

Ngl, it doesn't feel awesome that so much discourse about policies designed specifically to hurt trans people is about the negative effects it might have on some cis people.

Coates makes a number of highly salient points about Kirk's legacy, and the essay should be read by everyone - but for me it's so meaningful and symbolic that he doesn't make trans people an aside or downplay the fact that his anti-trans hatred was central to what made Kirk such a monster.
