The Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and the Fair Housing Act were legitimately enormous accomplishments. Vietnam was a monstrosity.

LBJ is a great illustration of why Manichean categorizations of presidents as "good" or "evil" don't work in most cases.

A couple of years later, in third grade, a new kid showed up in my class at school. He was from Vietnam and was living with a family in the neighborhood. When we went swimming at the YMCA, his body had big scars from napalm burns.

I was about 6 years old and knew about the Vietnam war from my parents and friends who had older brothers of military age. I wrote a letter to LBJ asking him to end the war and bring the troops home.

Eventually, I got a form letter back from the White House.

We've had at least four faculty in TN fired for expressing wrong opinions about Charlie Kirk. There's the faculty at TAMU fired for teaching about gender nonconformity, despite a review that found no justification for firing her. There's the tenured prof at Muhlenberg fired for criticizing Zionism.

Yes. She converted to marry. The fiancé broke the engagement because of her Jewish heritage (this was 1930s Germany), but the conversion took and she remained a faithful practicing Catholic the rest of her life.

Very different to post Vatican-II conversions, as you say.
