ICU Charge Nurse. Proctors' Bulldog.
Words in Departmental Safety Reminders.

'As a patient I would rather have a good nurse than a good physician. A physician gives his blessing, the surgeon does the operation - but it is the nurse who does the work.'

Sir Henry Souttar. No. 1 Belgian Field Hospital, Antwerp. 1915.
We suction intubated patients a minimum of two hourly and describe the 'goz' (amount/colour/consistency/tenacity(?)).
I'm going to start using this.
Why's it called potentially life-threatening infected mucus and not phlegm fatale?

'His gentle nature has been really comforting.'

- Patient & Family feedback that was passed on to me last night, heartfelt and you'd be forgiven for thinking I'm an ICU therapy dog.

Last graduation ceremony of the year done, last pair of black socks handed out 'yes, even with those heels'.
A golden hour glow in Clarendon Quad after the rain earlier this week. 🌧️

Work (the non-bowler hat one) has been quite difficult recently.
I don't think it could be sorted completely by the availability of a mysterious woodland nurse's hut to escape to, but it wouldn't do any harm.

Patients on propofol in ICU often report negative & disturbing experiences, with distorted perceptions of reality, delusions & hallucinations.

Propofol is unlikely to achieve reliable unconsciousness and may contribute to a negative dying experience.

Fantastic news and so well deserved!
🥳
We’re thrilled to celebrate our colleague @lottelydia.bsky.social, whose book Imperial Island (Harvard University Press, 2024) has just been awarded the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize by the American Historical Association! This prestigious award acknowledges Charlotte’s thought-provoking work.

I found this livestock auction poster from 1890 on the floor of an antique shop and had it framed for @eleanormaybaker.bsky.social. Absolute Units deserve all the fonts. @themerl.bsky.social

I had the most fantastic time presenting my paper ''Wykud spyritus þat wonon in þat wylde place': Folk Horror in Middle English Sermon Exempla' at @standrewsenglish.bsky.social. I couldn't have asked for a warmer audience with more interesting questions, what a wonderful place!

Wardable patients complaining about the yoghurt choices whilst I'm in the next bed hand ventilating a peri-arrest.
I love Homer's body here

Me, stood before a patient sustained by every mechanical medical intervention we can provide, as a relative speaks at length telling me how they hate the NHS because of one interaction with a GP receptionist in 1982.
We've been examining portraits in our collections, especially this one of Adeline Cable (1864–1944) pioneering nurse who served during the Boer War in South Africa. In 1907 she became Matron of Salisbury Infirmary, a position she held for 18 years, salisburyhealthcarehistory.uk/adeline-cable/

After a year in career development purgatory due to factors rather out of my control (being attacked at work lmao) I'm finally signed off as an independent ICU Coordinator. In celebration this current night shift is absolute carnage.

Me handing over ICU in the morning.
At least I can say I tried. I didn’t try, but I can say I did.

Unexpectedly being called a 'fucking wanker' by a patient isn't great, but when they're intubated, ventilated, slightly sedated, and communicating through mouthing words and mime you've got to admire their tenacity.

Back pain flare up has me lying on the living room floor.
Maybe the patient moving and handling structure of 'needs four people to roll, or two people and Rob' needs review.

I had a great time at @imc-leeds.bsky.social presenting my ideas about folk horror and John Mirk's Festial exempla (more to come, hopefully...)

Ignore that I spelled example wrong in my slide. That was to keep the audience on their toes, obviously.
