Really recommend reading this piece by @kissane.myatproto.social if you are about the future of social media and decentralized networks. This piece is not just about Trump's arrival on Bluesky; it's about the state of play for the open networking sector, and the political risks it faces.
Trump Administration's Arrival on Bluesky Highlights Growing Pains for Open Networks | TechPolicy.Press
The administration’s antagonistic entry to the platform is best understood as a game of chicken, writes Erin Kissane.

Europe should tell Trump and RFK Jr. it exports an amazing alternative to Tylenol called paracetamol and use that as leverage in tariff negotiations.

This is simply untenable. There is no way forward with media and political classes captured by the right. Every time someone commits a crime you have to pray it's not an undesirable or it's purge time, then when it turns out to be themselves again they just shrug and wait for the next one.

“MPs are struggling to find anywhere on the internet that isn’t hostile territory. The online right monopolises X and are dominant on YouTube. On TikTok, neither the online left nor online right has much need for or interest in members of parliament.”
Social media has ruined politics
The right have been radicalised, while abuse forces moderates off the platforms. This can’t go on

🚨An important reminder of the trauma faced by asylum seekers.

Not just in fleeing persecution abroad.

Not just in the perilous and desperate journey to these shores.

But by the hatred and vitriol put on them by the right wing in this country for callous political gain.

Hello. I wrote a nice long essay about AI and this very strange moment where we're constantly told we're living in the dawn of a strange new future but the only thing that's actually clear is that everyone feels pretty unmoored and uncertain. I hope you'll read it
AI Is a Mass-Delusion Event
Three years in, one of AI’s enduring impacts is to make people feel like they’re losing it.

My least popular (and most correct) view is that cars should be automatically limited to the local speed limit. Put the pedal to the floor and you still can't go over 25mph in a residential area.

(15 in Manhattan btw)
There is no possible justification for limiting e-bikes to 15mph but not cars.

When traffic flow is more or less continuous, the same number of drivers are going to wait briefly when the lights change. So why not have lights change immediately? Why does it matter which specific drivers are the ones waiting?
How long are you waiting to cross the road? 🚦

Research shows that after 30 seconds pedestrians are more likely to run out of patience and risk crossing the road before the signals change.

It's about who shapes what we believe: influencers + algorithms + online crowds.

About bespoke realities, fractured publics, and consensus collapse.

The propaganda campaign to reframe studying mis/disinfo as part of some “censorship industrial complex” to suppress the right was phenomenally effective - bc academia treated it as a debate ab facts, not a power game. Stanford botched the war for public opinion, thought status quo would hold.
For the last 3 yrs, I was the director for the Science of Science program at the NSF. We funded projects on science communication - science communication to the public, communication of public priorities to scientists, citizens engagement & participation in science. 🧵

$hopping, a film about ram raiding starring Jude Law and Sadie Frost. I think it was aiming for a Bladerunner vibe but all I remember is it had an Orbital track on the soundtrack and some absolutely terrible dialogue.
Blue Juice (1995) with Catherine Zeta Jones and Sean Pertwee. Everyone in West Cornwall went to see it as they almost certainly knew some of the extras and definitely knew the locations. It was like Jurassic Park in West Cornwall, receits-wise, and empty theatres everywhere else because it was shit.
