When people complain about tech debt, and business disregard for it, they don't usually *actually* mean a limited set of specific issues.

What they're complaining about is a lack of "slack" to take on un-prioritized, but important work.

Slack is important for any healthy team.

Today is a good day to remember, and to say, that the #MeToo movement was right, and was righteous, and has been vindicated over and over again. There was no overreach. There was no excess. There was no they-went-too-far.

So much work remains to be done.

Any competent judge would find that gender *is* germane to the job of providing a safe ride. It's like gender-specific airport pat downs. Or massage.
just a dead on example of how our flawed definition and conception of discrimination doesn’t stand up to scrutiny
“The dual class action suits allege that the functions—which followed thousands of sexual harassment and assault lawsuits against Uber and Lyft over the years— have limited the economic opportunities for men and discriminated against them because of their gender.”

So I hear there was some kind of interestingly boring baseball game...

Where a *lot* of nothing happened, even more than ordinary baseball games?

The focus on employment policies applied under lawyer-coordinated time pressure (seemingly very CYA) on a project that has a vast gradient of volunteer and paid work is interesting. It explains a lot of RC missteps.

Not all of them.. but the initial ones smell exactly like lawyer-induced panic.

Every time I get a Ruby Central update in my inbox, I wonder how they're going to butcher community management this time. Weekly updates may have been a mistake.

Nazi symbolism has been creeping into hyper masculinity for decades. Because there is nothing more toxicly masc than mass murder and being the violent bad guy. It was normalized in many sub-cultures including militaries and tattoo parlors.

It's also what has helped far right parties surge...

Musing on SOA: Object Oriented programming has fallen out of fashion, but it hasn't actually gone away at all. It just moved to the cloud.

Data + Behavior is just no longer constrained to a single class. It's database tables + APIs.

But like in classic OO, naming your domain is everything.

It's like politicians haven't heard of the term "narrative frame".
The lesson is clear: you can’t outflank the far right by borrowing its language. You only validate its narrative, undermine your own authenticity, and make democracy more fragile in the process.

Key idea for recommendation engines like Netflix: provide a free entry text for describing the _why_ behind a thumbs down. (process with machine)
This show: too much gore.
That show: just boring.
Altered Carbon: TERF writer.

Makes it much easier to develop the heuristics for great algo suggestions.

Yes, LLMs are fancy word-guessing machines.

I think a lot of people conceive of something like food stamps as allowing employers to lower wages (because employees can survive on less) when really they raise wages (because employees can survive without the boss).

Missing the Point on Employer Subsidies
One of the things critics of low-wage employers sometimes say is that those employers are being subsidized by "the taxpayer" because their employees have to enroll in food stamps and Medicaid to make

Just: completely clean house.
the next Dem administration needs to take the most expansive view of the honest services fraud statute that they possibly can and charge anyone trying to curry favor with Trump under it (including, yes, Tim Apple)
The f*cked part is that this is a totally rational thing to do in an autocracy. Businesses know His Royal Majesty can make doing business inordinately difficult, so they lavish him with gifts and praise his greatness and etc etc

I passionately hate that we're here

The meme of going to protests to get laid has been around since at least the 60s (I assume old news even then).

Newsflash: those protests are left leaning. Just show up for women and minorities, JFC. It's not that hard; guys.
The left is completely silent on the subject of men getting laid - which, generally speaking, they are v.interested in doing and will continue to be interested in regardless of whether progressives want to talk about it. So the stage has been left entirely clear for the far-right.

Good plants. Now do plastics!
Some hopeful sci-fi science. There is a class of plants called hyperaccumulators, which can absorb heavy metals from soils and store them in their biomass. Planting and harvesting them for the metals (phytomining) may be an interesting soil reclamation strategy. 🧪
