On this Labor Day, I'm writing about my response to the growing demand for artist labor. "Against Performance" is the author's answer to the meme, "Darling, I do not dream of labor."

Out today and free to read. Happy labor day.

An update, fifteen more 2024 reads - a lot of ACOTAR & The Expanse this time round. #amreading

Finished GODDESS OF THE RIVER by Vaishnavi Patel and enjoyed it muchly. Not quiiiite as much as Kaikeyi, which I adored, but still fascinating and, in the right places, quite moving.

This cover is FUCKING GORGEOUS. And after how good A Taste of Gold & Iron was, I need to read it pretty much immediately.
Cover reveal!!! YIELD UNDER GREAT PERSUASION is a cozy M/M romantasy about second chances, learning to forgive yourself -- and a one-sided enemies-to-lovers situationship. 👀 Out on Sept 17th, links below!!

The Bayou is fully one of my favourite things I’ve ever read.
I got the estimate for the latest round of house work (5-figure range), so this would be a really fantastic time to buy my books! Queer fantasy, romance, and gothic by a queer indie author who'd really love to catch a break!!

Ginn Hale. Her Cadelelionian series and Rifter trilogy are fantastic, and I hate how they never quite broke out of the homoshere into fantasy readership at large.

Finished Laura Sebastian’s HALF SICK OF SHADOWS tonight. I really liked it! The use of past/present/future tense to cleanly delineate flashback/present day/visions was neat, esp whenever she had a vision in the past. Also it evoked time loop vibes in cool ways while being it’s own thing. #amreading

Sooo… Dayspring is pretty great. #amreading

Picked up a bunch of new books during my trip to Sydney, NS! A nice split of novels and poetry, with a dash of short stories. #amreading

Flying is so great for my reading habits. I read three of the Expanse series this vacation, and a lot of that was while I was travelin’! #amreading

At the urging of my older sister, I ripped through the rest of the ACOTAR books, and liked them quite a bit! Got a little tired of some of the ensemble cast by the latest book, but the pov shift was very welcome (and perhaps could have come a book earlier…).
After a bit of reading drought, months spent picking at books without completing them, I’ve finished off three books in the first week of my summer break: Russ Thomas’ Cold Reckoning, Ada Limon’s The Carrying, and Sarah J. Maas’ A Court of Thorns and Roses. #amreading

After losing my reading momentum for a few months, I’ve picked up the habit again in the last week or so. Finished the third book in Russ Thomas’s fairly compelling Det. Adam Tyler crime series (and excited to hear a fourth book is out), and have started digging into a handful of others. #amreading

Reading Tina Chang’s poetry collection Of Gods & Strangers out on the back deck today, and got hit by the one-two punch of the beautifully evocative So Much Light We Could See to the Other Side and the painfully real Story of Girls inside a few pages. Gods, I love poetry. #amreading

I’ve been picking at David Rhodes’ JEWELWEED for a year now, at a chapter here and a few pages there, and I’ve finally started to get some momentum on it. It’s so lovely and thoughtful, I’m excited to get into the meat of the story. #amreading

I started reading the third book in Gemma Files’ Hexslinger series the other day… and realized it had been so long I couldn’t understand a single thing that was happening. So now I’m rereading book 2 while I confusedly step my way thru book 3 😅 #amreading

Finished reading Allen Bratton’s witty, haunting HENRY HENRY tonight. Fuck… I felt that book in my blood. #amreading

In other reading news, I’ve been dipping my toe back into David Rhodes’ small town character study JEWELWEED, which is so carefully and thoughtfully written. Hoping to finally develop proper momentum on it this time. #amreading

Last night, had one of those moments where a book punches you in the face and gets its hooks right into you — Allen Bratton’s HENRY HENRY took me by the best sort of surprise. Dark but not grim, haunting and messy and overflowing with voice. Can’t wait to get back into it. #amreading

I have not been reading nearly as much this year, but I’ve started in on (at the behest of, genuinely, a random hot man on Scruff) HUNTER’S OATH by Michelle West. Enjoying it so far, we’ll see how it goes. #amreading

The Darkness Outside Us was one of my favourite books I read in 2022, if not my outright #1, and I am just discovering there will be a SEQUEL YESSS.

Side note: this cover is fucking gorgeous.
Have been so excited to share this cover with you. THE BRIGHTNESS BETWEEN US will be out on 10/1.

I'll share storyline details soon. For now I'm just basking in the lovely thing @sarahmaxwellart and the team at @katherinetegenbooks have created!

Up until recently I was keeping an unwieldy mountain of poetry on my nightstand, but I’ve recently decided to winnow it down to a handful. The current stack is:

Sam Sax’s Pig
Another Last Call ed. Kaveh Akbar & Paige Lewis
Ada Limon’s The Carrying
Tommy Pico’s IRL
Tina Chang’s Of Gods & Strangers
