"Generally speaking, American conservatives prioritize liberty over equality. They understand liberty as a set of privileges; a major part of the value of liberty comes from the fact that others are denied those privileges. Equality is an inherent threat to liberty." – Hattem, The Memory of '76

Then they came for your right to privacy, and you said nothing for you had nothing to hide.

Then they came for your free speech rights, and you said nothing.

Remember this - if you think the government did the right thing here because you don't like Khalil's politics, that's exactly why they targeted him. If our rights don't protect all of us, then they protect none of us.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.

If the government is allowed to detain a lawful permanent resident like Mahmoud Khalil for his advocacy in support of Palestinian rights, all of our free speech rights are at risk.

Read Mahmoud's message to the country, in his own words.

Section 230 is not the easiest piece of regulation to understand, but the bottom line is easy to grasp. Without Section 230 protections, the only people who get to own websites will be those that can pay an army of lawyers to protect them from a flood of bogus content complaints.

Just because the Satanic Grotto has the right to their speech doesn't change how abhorrent that speech is.

This isn't edgy secularists making a valid point about freedom of speech, this is a bunch of provocative assholes and we shouldn't give them the time of day.

The CR passed in the House will provide a blank check for Trump and Musk to continue their savage war against working families, the elderly, children, the sick and the poor in order to lay the groundwork for massive tax breaks for billionaires.

This is a bill I cannot support.

This should scare everyone. The Trump admin revoked Mahmoud’s legal status, kidnapped him, and is now holding him in an ICE detention facility without any due process.

Trump is an authoritarian, testing the limits to see how much he can get away with. He won’t stop here.

utterly fucking astounding that any Dem would look at what’s happening and think that giving this administration sweeping new authority to prosecute speech on the internet is a good idea
It’s time to repeal Section 230. We must be able to take social media companies to court for addicting kids and enabling drug trafficking on their platforms.
Sen. DURBIN: Fentanyl often gets to our kids and young people through the internet.

Section 230 absolves social media companies from any responsibility. “That has got to end.”

As an offshoot of this thread, let’s talk about what happens if federal, state, or local officials text, email, call, or show up at your door wanting to talk to you about what you said about the President.

I have a theme, a thesis, a throughline, a leitmotif, which is SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH.

This is a First Amendment question combined with a practical question. The answer is as follows.

First, the First Amendment protects advocating the moral and practical necessity of breaking the law in the abstract.

Being a lawyer and all, do you know what the tipping point is for it to become acceptable to openly advocate for political assassinations? Just a little curious, is all.
