When I was starting out as an erotica writer, I hung out a lot with an older gay man who'd been writing smut forever. He told me that without straight women writing gay paperbacks in the 1950s, gay culture as we know it might not exist. He insisted gay men owed these ladies a huge unpayable debt.

“As prices for streaming subscriptions continue to soar and finding movies to watch, new and old, is becoming harder as the number of streaming services continues to grow, people are turning to the unexpected last stronghold of physical media: the public library.”
The Last Video Rental Store Is Your Public Library
Audio-visual librarians are quietly amassing large physical media collections amid the IP disputes threatening select availability.

Archives face so many risks. Floods, fire, theft - archives management is always partly facilities management.

Now, LLMs. Give us a break!
Talking to somebody yesterday about a Cdn oral history archive that disappeared - turns out LLMs were scraping it so much it crashed their servers so it’s offline. Vile vulture technology.

all of the shit about how if you allow people to transition kids are going to be peeing in litter boxes was just the mirror image of the reality: as soon as you enshrine immutable gender difference in law you're going to have legally required Lady Meals For Her

Sending good vibes and godspeed to all the projectionists out there who will no doubt be feeling this in their hands, shoulders, necks, backs and knees -- since 95% of us are <40 or older and that A LOT of loading and changeovers.
By the way, if you are fortunate enough to be in Philadelphia in the next two weeks, you can see Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair on 35mm the way God intended. (I am told the 70mm blowups actually don’t look great.)

It’s hard to not see the Netflix/WB news as a sort of doomsday scenario. The constant mergers and large scale absorptions of brands might be good for business, in theory, but they are bad for art; they are bad for creators; they are bad for preservation. Which makes it bad for us.

My cure for The Bleakness™: make something with your hands.
It helps, I promise.
Plus it often spirals (in a nice way) into other creative projects. Can't make things this cute and NOT take photos. Tiny outfits for tiny frogs WOULD be cute -- time to make tiny outfits.

the issue here, especially with TCM, is more than half of its programming came from the Turner, and later WB, library. If you remove the network from the library, how is it going to afford to license 100% of its programming?
I just heard from someone at Netflix. TCM is apparently going with the other linear networks to Discovery Global.

Here is the official comment on what WBD assets will be acquired by Netflix:

"We are acquiring the film and television studios, HBO and HBO Max."

Ooooof this Netflix / Warner Bros / HBO (?) is potentially a big blow to Crave here in Canada isn't it?
I mean, the HBO subscription is basically the only reason I have that.

I made it through Rainbow Connection with dry eyes but ooooh, I was not prepared for Gonzo's I'm Going to Go Back There Someday. Tears just rolling freely down my face. I'd never seen the Muppet Movie until tonight and what a joy to watch it on a big screen with a group of people.

Canada made weird tv shows because it was all being done with government funded art grant money so they fell in this wacky middle ground between “shoestring budget” and “no expectation to generate shareholder value” which is really the best way to make art
