PSA: tips to protect yourself from scams on Signal.

Every major comms platform has to contend w phishing, impersonation, & scams. Sadly.

Signal is major, and as we've grown we've heard about more of these attacks--scammy people pretending to be something or someone to trick and abuse others. 1/

I really think everyone, all users, should subscribe to blacksky's moderation. @moderation.blacksky.app I've said it before. Nonblack users laugh it up with & boost accounts we can see are flagged for antiblackness all the time. Keeping watch for antiblackness should be part of an ally's journey.

Me: Please get precooked chicken at the store. Neither of us has much experience cooking raw meat. If you get precooked meat and we then cook it some more, it’ll probably be fine.

A: You’re being paranoid. I know how to cook raw chicken!

Smash cut to both of us having food poisoning.

My heart actually beats faster when I’m in a flow state; it feels a little like falling in love, like making eye contact with a crush from across the room. Does it happen every time? No. But it happens enough to make the act worth it.
100% this.

If you can't find joy in the act of writing, and feel euphoria after editing several drafts into exactly what your thoughts had in mind (or close to it), then I really suggest you don't become a writer.

The idea, the thoughts, are nothing without execution. The work is the thing.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.

Thank you Malta Book Festival for bringing one of my literary heroes @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social for a fascinating and wide-ranging convo. He talked about the biodiversity in Florida, shared tips for writing about impossible things, and spilled the tea re: the Annihilation movie #SouthernReach 📚

Under new head of Paramount David Ellison, the studio has drawn up a list of actors who opposed the Gaza genocide and will not allow them to appear in its films and TV shows.

Does this sound familiar?

Also, "Ellison is reportedly aiming to take over Warner Bros. next."

I’m in Malta right now, reading a news article about how birth rate is low because people don’t get enough maternity leave (18 weeks). And two things are true simultaneously: the mandated leave here should be longer AND how many Americans would give anything to get 18 weeks maternity leave.
