"Imagine you stole all of the intellectual property in the world. And you're using it to help people write middling emails and make revenge porn about women, and also children. And you're powering this plagiarism and non-consensual porn machine by eating up what's left of humanity's carbon budget."

Politics, football and movies are among the many topics that tend to come up around Thanksgiving. In 2025, a new question may arise at the table: Why the heck is everyone talking about AI, and what sh...

The enshittification of Google and knowledge writ large is firmly upon us.
Google at its peak was basically the best information retrieval system in human history and they and every competitor decided going from there to “you didn’t want answers you wanted half-assed auto-complete 80%-wrong hallucinations” in a few years was the right idea

On top of that, you'll be losing negotiation power to competition from other buyers trying to panic-buy a new house before the rates go back up.

Buy what you can afford. You can't refinance an overvalued house purchase.

Is it a casualty of Amazon/ eBooks or an indication that students don't consume books anymore? I fear it's the latter.
Just stopped by the Fordham Lincoln Center bookstore for the first time in a while, and it’s been wholly remodeled—to have zero books, just gear.

Clearly a casualty of Amazon.

But. Man.

I LOVED to wander the bookstore as an undergrad, see all the cool stuff OTHER courses were reading.

To give you an idea about just how eventful the end of COP30 was, I wrote and rewrote this entire 2000 story for @drilledmedia.bsky.social three times over a period of about six hours as it was all happening.
COP-tastrophe: How the COP of Implementation, Truth, Forests, and Indigenous Peoples Failed on All Counts
COP30 began full of promise but ended as yet another reminder that the mechanism for global climate governance is broken.

This is one of the worst, most horrifying exposures we have ever seen. It is hard to overstate how bad the things that people are using tools like for are, and it's insane to pretend like these tools are anything other than nonconsensual porn machines

I saw a name in an article today that reminded me of a boy that I went to grade school with. I looked him up, to see where he was now. Dead by gun violence. And not the first son his mother had to bury who died by gun violence. I remembered him because he was kind to me. His name was Doc Ware.

The UK Government has released its response to the House of Lords’ Media Literacy report. The Lords warned that poor media literacy threatens democracy itself. The government agrees, but its plan focuses on coordination more than transformation.

And pushing concrete is hard and often unrewarding work.
I do some online teaching, and this is one of the benefits, along with opening up education to people in rural and regional areas. However, to quote a friend, if you want to build a house you gotta push concrete. There are skills you get from face to face that are difficult to replicate with online.
The impression I got from OU was always that it was especially good for folks where the traditional benefits (like full time, campus based) are, for some people, explicitly disbenefits because they're mid-career or have specific care responsibilities that make on-campus study hard too

Great business model! They have to turn a profit somewhere, right? Get the audience (of lonely and poorly socialized males) addicted on an investor-subsidized product (of personalized porn) and then, slowly but inevitably, turn up the cost.

Honestly, how good would be Piazza Plaza?
as someone whose mother still calls him “salvatore” and who ate braciole multiple times a week as a child I feel I have the credentials to say Mamdani is right, fuck Columbus. he should be replaced with someone like Scorsese, Italo Calvino, Giada De Laurentiis or my personal preference, Mike Piazza
